I've heard that rose hips and potassium (molasses, beans, nuts, and greens are goo sources) are helpful. I'd also ask the doc about a prescription for Relafen. It isn't super powerful, but I think it is a nice safe all-day pain killer.
Chronic pain is frustrating to deal with. I find that its super important to initially bring the pain down to a very low level with a strong pain killer an then try to figure out medication to keep it from climbing back up. They often hate to prescribe a few days worth of one of the big guns to ratchet it down, but I think its a critical part of pain management. Also, I hear that some antidepressants can be very valuable when used with pain medication. If you are going to put off the surgery, then I highly recommend a consult with a pain specialist.
