Every spring we get two separate Clans here and they fight for the feeder(two separate feeders didn't help). Last year I witnessed the death of a female because of their combat but that's rare, most of the time they provide great entertainment while I'm puffing away on the deck.
I had one for several years, it was a handsome pipe and a good smoker I only traded it because it didn't fit anymore. It was a 1sun 2D IIRC, a good quality pipe in my book
I only smoke outside, in good weather on the front deck in bad the enclosed back porch. FWIW I live in the woods so nobody to offend except maybe a squirrel or two. ;)
One could always hope for a global crash/depression to lower pipe prices, as for tobacco I'm just not that worried about spikes or taxes, maybe if we see a total ban but I kinda doubt that also.
I got a couple of Rugers, two Colts, Two Winchesters, a couple of Brownings and a S&W. FWIW I can't smoke and shoot at the same time as I'm hopelessly lefty in all things including smoking a pipe.
I have two 4dot #7 pipes, the first I bought new at a BM in the mid-eighties for $70.00 ruff root stamped made in France, the second I bought new from Iwan in the nineties on closeout for $40.00 smooth walnut stamped made in England. Both are good smokers but nothing I'd pay +$100.00 for.
This year it's been Bleeker street, I started with Mettowee then Bohemian mix was my #1 till it was discontinued so Mettowee become #1 again.
What I'll do is have two blends and switch so over the years it's been 191, Vermont Maple as alternates, I've also smoked a few pounds of Gotham court and...
I've been smoking her blends exclusively for better than 10 years and Her tobacco is top notch IMHO, ordering is painless(I'm due another pound this week :) ) my only concern is that she doesn't retire anytime soon.
The honey treatment was recommend by Tinderbox in their booklet for new pipe smokers, I got one when I bought my first pipe there back in the early 80's.
I just coated a NOS pipe I bought, I've never done it to an estate and only on bare wood new pipes. Don't know if it's needed or not but like you that's what I was told way back in the day :)
Even IF my wife wasn't sensitive to smoke I doubt I'd smoke much inside. Pipe smoking and being outside(preferably in the woods)just seems about perfect to me, throw out the extremes(highs/lows) and there's still a lot of enjoyable outside puffing days in Northeast Ohio.
