Shaking Your Ash?
Once I started tapping out ash as I smoke my bowls have started tasting much better. (and they were good to begin with) I now have one of those ash trays with a cork in it... and I tap out ash now and then so all I have on top are the embers. Cool ash has to go.- stevuke79

Is Cake Important? Why?
I keep my pipe CLEAN! I use dry pipe cleaners after every smoke and ream it with a paper towel. At least once a year I clean it with vodka until I can't get any more pipe-juice out of those pours. The only thing I want in my pipe is briar and fresh tobacco. So no cake for me. I used to try...- stevuke79

Fair enough. Perhaps my title was overly dramatic. I was being cute. Tbh I started smoking a pipe only a few years ago... McClelland was one of my first, it was great, and I stopped there. Wood at the Bottom of Missouri Meerschaum Bowls
I've definitely smoked a little wood once or twice. Not the best taste but not the worst. It's ok. After a few smokes the heat chars the wood and the risk is gone. What bothers ME is that you can neither smoke all of the tobacco surrounding that wood bit nor can you really clean it all out...- stevuke79
