I enjoy both GH Black Irish X and GH Rum Twist. Agree with the general comments above, especially about the Black Irish X--very strong, lots of nic, slice very fine. Also, I find Black Irish X really stinks up a pipe, so I have one dedicated to it.
Revisiting this thread. When I first opened my tin of Cabbie's I really enjoyed it--very nice VaPer, zero lakeland. Fast forward several months, and I cracked the jar for the first time since my initial few smokes. The aroma is the same, but the flavor--very soapy. And actually, a friend of mine...
I enjoyed the dinner at last year's show. For your money, you get a decent dinner with wine, entertaining speaker and conversation, and at last year's dinner there was a tobacco and whisky tasting hosted by Drew Estates--they had samples of pipe tobacco and cigars available, and several bottles...
I have a P2 (with the copper band, not the new rally P2), an "El Dagner" (the Eltang collaboration), and a couple of the cob pokers. Their briar pipes are good values and smoke well. They are Italian made and quality pipes that are QC checked by the Dagners. Nice open draws and smoke well. Same...
It's a matter of debate how long you can keep them in bags and depends a lot on your humidity. They will start losing something, but the big concern is drying out. I'd think you safely have a week or two, and even after that they'll still be smokeable and it's easy to rehydrate if they get a...
To follow up, I also have several african meers, and the weight of the cultured block is between the heavier african block and the lighter turkish block. All smoke well.
Who do you all like for meerschaum repairs? I have two pipes that need attention--one is a Bauer billiard and the push-pull tenon has gotten worn down over time and it's too loose, so I need it replaced; the other is a Thompson rusticated straight dublin meer with the metal screw in tenon and...
That's a tall pipe, alright. I have an old Stanwell chimney that's almost 3 inches and I love a bowl of virginia in it. I tend to pack the bottom of the bowl a little looser than normal since it will become compressed with all of the extra tamping associated with a tall bowl. I also rub out...
I have both. My Strambach is a little heavier than my turkish meers but they smoke the same--very dry smoking experience. Andreas Bauer pipes used cultured meerschaum as well and those are highly regarded, so you shouldn't be put off by the product.
You might want to check out Trevor Talbert's Ligne Bretagne pipes. These are made with very old french stummels and they tend to be on the smaller size, so you might find one that's around a group 1 size. My only true group 1 bowl is actually an old Sasieni Mayfair, so you may want to check out...
Ropps are very good pipes. I personally find their draw a little restricted, but that's a matter of personal taste. Even with that I do have a nice horn-stemmed bulldog that smokes well. They're decent pipes for the money.
I'll add to the folks recommending Peretti's Burley Slices. I know it's out of stock on the website, but you can give them a call and see if they have any or if they have an ETA for when it will be back in stock.
