I have bothe the Zippo pipe lighter and the Xikar Pipeline. I sent the Pipeline back when it literally fell apart (spring flew out). Xikar was good to their word and promptly replaced it. No probs with it as long as the wind isn't around. I have not experienced any probs with the Zippo. I do use the no/low odor fuel. Great all-around lighter.

Speaking of Zippos. My pipe insert has a bunch of tar on it.(black junk).is there any solvent or a way to get it off?

I use a Zippo when I'm running around due to the ease of use. I never notice the gassy taste. Just let it burn for a sec and all should be well. Also, I only use Zippo fluid.

I am a pretty devout zippo user, and have never found that gas like taste come through my pipe when I figured it all out. Try holding the pipe insert zippo a little above the rim of your pipe, that will help. Also, the black can of fluid is helpful as well. The last tip I can give is to let the wick burn for a bit, I find every time I pull up more wick I get the taste again. When the wick is good and black it goes away.
Hang with it and the zippo will reward you. It never goes out, always lights easy, and with it's warranty it will outlive you. I picked up an old beat up brass one at a second hand shop for about 5 bucks today and after a new flint and some new fluid it lit like a dream. I'm going to send it off to have a pipe insert put into it so I can keep a backup in my car :D

I, too, like the old fashioned Zippo lighter, which uses fluid and a pipe insert. I have two of them.

I have two beautiful brass zippos with pipe inserts and I don't mind occasional lighter fluid taste. I use the black can fluid shown in the previous post.
