I did find some info on the web showing how to seal a Zippo with those bands or a piece of a bicycle inner tube and looks like a chore to have to pull down the rubber to open the cap and then push it back after closing the cap to seal it. If one does lots of relights it doesn't look very practical.

Love my zippo. Love the smell of the fluid, lets me know it's pipe time! Plus there is nothing like that metalic flink noise when you open it. I used to hate relights until I got a zippo. My desire to tinker with it and refill always comes to me before actual need to refill so I dont mind the short life.

I never understood why, in so many movies, they throw the Zippo to light a fire from a distance instead of just lighting the fire and then putting it back in their pocket to take it with them.

I leave it off while I’m smoking. It goes back on before I dump the dottle out my pipe. But yeah, it just goes around the seam where the lighter opens. It’s very easy to stretch on and off with the ranger bands.

Well the AliExpress old boy wannabe lasted a few days. Total junk. Stay away.10 euros plus 6 for shipping and I got what I paid for. I know other members had a better experience.
So back to the pipe Zippo and Bic ez. And to the cheap kitchen matches of course.
I fixed the lighter. The tiny screw which holds the striking wheel was loose. Easy fix but still this shouldn't happen at a new lighter.
Maybe loctite will fix it permanently.

Only issue is evaporation. But I’ve found that 1.5” x 0.5” rubber bands (ranger/skog bands, can buy on Amazon) makes fuel last 3x longer. They also don’t look tacky wrapped on the lighter and easy enough to remove and stretch back on. This is the only thing that will work to slow down evaporation in a zippo, and I’m surprised barely anybody talks about it.

I only use my Zippo Pipe Lighter on windy days when I can't use matches or hemp wick. The evaporation was a real pain in the rump because I was only getting ten lights per week on a tank of gas due to using it so seldom. I saw this idea and ordered it from Amazon, and I'm on week three and going strong. THANK YOU for the tip.

I got my 1st Zippo after bootcamp 43 years ago and have been using them ever since. I do carry a Bic back-up in case I get in a hurry and forget to fill the Zippo, but it's become part of the morning routine over the years.
1) tobacco pouch full check,
2) pipe in left shirt pocket check,
3) zippo with strong flame and good flint in jean watch/zippo pocket check,
4) full coffee cup check,
5) truck keys check.
Good to go.

I've been using my Zippo for the past two weeks as my bics died. I usually flip it open right to left and strike it with my right thumb and light my pipe as I would a cigarrette. While driving the other day I had it reversed opening it from left to right and striking it from the underside; lid near my right hand vs opposed. I was surprised at how much better control I had and how quickly I lit the pipe with the flame directly over the tobacco and no where near the rim. I've been using it that way ever since. I guess I was operating it wrong all these years. Live and learn.

Anyone other have an idea? Thanks
The closer you hold the lighter to the pipe, the more it will draw it down. When I use my zippo with the pipe insert I basically set it right on top of the bowl, being careful to keep the flame from the edges. However, you don’t even have to draw so hard you bring the flame down, you can often draw enough to bring the necessary heat for lighting your pipe without actually drawing the flame down into the bowl.
