In the old days, I lit cigarettes off a jet heater. The fuel taste argument is old and tired. Let the lighter burn a second! A Zippo is the most dependable, cheapest lighter solution period. It's not sexy, but it works. When you want to schmooze with the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, bring your Old Boy to the party.

I'm new to the pipe world. I like the look of the Zippo but to me I smell and taste of the fuel feels like it's kills the tobacco. So I just stick with butane lighters
Zippo are the most American, nostalgic and everlasting items ever.
But my last choice except in high winds, then it's the only choice.

I like the Zippo because it's one of the few lighters that still work when the wind picks up. My Old Boy knock off works great when it's very calm, but I smoke outside and it's rare when it's real calm.

I enjoy using both regular/traditional zippos and butane lighters (Kiribi, IM Corona, Dunhill Rollagas), and sometimes zippo butane lighter :). Quit using matches years ago. I don't like the burned match sticks piling up in the ash tray nor leaving the smoldering burnt match head there
