Zippo Lighter or Butane Lighter

What do you use and why?

No matter how much I love the construction and look of Zippos, I can still taste the fuel.

I learned, at a young age, to let the taste burn off before applying the Zippo to a cigarette or pipe.

That said, I use what's near at hand, Zippo, Bic, matches, my Peterson, a smoldering stick, a lighter borrowed from the guy next to me.

Why? I enjoy the nicotine and the tobacco needs to be ignited. It all seems so obvious to me.

If you smoke inside, anything would do. I only smoke outside. Almost anything will work if I spend long enough time, but Zippo and Bic work the best for me. Being using Zippo since I was 12, and it never let me down as long as I remember to fill the fuel.

Zippo is my personal favorite lighter of all time. My first girlfriend bought me a Led Zeppelin one for Christmas one year in high school. LOVE the look and tactile feel of them. For a pipe, I prefer butane. I can smell a zippo across the room. I’ll be honest, I have yet to ever try a zippo on a pipe. I use a kiribi old boy style pipe lighter. Love it, but it’s almost like it’s the opposite of wind proof.

they're great with the pipe inserts. Easy to use and burns cooler then a bic. Never used a Kiribi I try not to spend that much on something that can fall out of ones pocket

If it’s not windy it will most always be matches, old boy or kiribi. If it’s windy or slightly windy it’s the zippo for sure. Especially walking the dog.

Zippo is my last resort, when it's howling- or if it's the only handy item!

As to what produces the coolest flame for the gentlest of lights, any damn thing can be used. You just have to vary time and distance.

I smoke outside so its a Zippo for me. I prefer matches and use them if the weather permits.

I’d use the burning finger of my dead enemies if it lit my pipe.

I like the Zippo’s feel, flame, and ease of use. Any residual fuel smell/taste quickly dissipates.

I use an old boy style knock off. But its useless outside. Im about to order a butane pipe insert for an extra zippo I have laying around.

I use butanes and matches until the wind is over 10-12 mph. Face the breeze, and cup hands around the bowl.

The reason this works better is that when your back is to the wind, additional eddies are created that often snuff the flame.

I have an IM Corona Old Boy, because I wanted a good lighter I could control the flame size on.

SPC also sold me on it!

SPC has a deal with the lighters, if you buy it through them, after the two year warranty runs out, they cover it there, so it’s covered for life.

I only smoke indoors and the deal seemed to good to pass up.

I use a zippo, because when I realized that running out of matches relighting was going to be a problem, I wanted to go with a pipe lighter I knew I could trust.

Although I am a huge fan of Zippo and have a small collection, I use Kiribi Kabuto/BIC/matches while smoking a pipe.
