I love my zippo. I've had it through several deployments overseas and a number of stations across the US. In every climate it never fails, my only issue is the constant refill issue. The trick that I have found to eliminate that lighter fluid taste is after your initial fill, light it and let it burn a couple seconds, while moving the lighter in all directions. This will burn up some leftover fuel and eliminate a lot of that taste. I hope it helps:)

Butane inserts totally defeat the main advantage of a Zippo, wind resistance, and are therefore no better than a $1 generic bic. Plus they are a total PITA if you're left-handed, as the flame can only come out one side, so if a lefy holds it so he can work the striker with his left thumb the flame shoots out back toward his hand, not forward over the pipe!
If you can taste the fuel, either a)you aren't giving it a sec to burn off, b)you're holding the lighter too close to the pipe rim (1/2" above minimum, more with a fresh fill), or c)it's all in your head.

Shutterbugg, I ran into the same issue being a lefty, but in order to continue my hobby I've become quite ambidextrous in that respect;)

Zippos (regular and pipe insert) are completely ambidextrous in operation. I have never used one right handed...which is probably why I have never set myself on fire :D The only thing for me is the engraving if any faces out (or down, with the pipe insert).
