That is unfortunate to hear. I have only tried a few lat blends, but my last order contained a tin of Nightcap. I am going to crack it after I finish off the two open tins. I have also found I prefer virginias and light aromatics, but Nightcap sounds like a good smoke to end the day. Can only order 2-3 tins of tobacco at a time so got to be careful what I choose, hoping I like it.

Colcolt, I really like NightCap and EMP but also like Louisiana Red. I also find, like some others have mentioned, that the pipe/tobacco combo matters. I have found that a medium, straight bowl works best for NC for me. Pipe doesn't overwhelm me with the Nic hit but the flavors come through nicely. My favorite pipe shape for almost all Virginias is a cone shaped bowl like a Dublin - seems to concentrate the flavors as I get through the bowl. And don't forget, your tastes may change over time and may find yourself craving that big Dunhill NC. Good luck and good smoking!

I think to really enjoy Nightcap it should have some age on it to round out the flavors. I used to smoke a lot of it until it went to Orlik. Have not smoked any in quite awhile.

Colcolt: I find it a bit interesting though that you don't like Dunbar (a Va/Per) but love LA Red and Escudo. The only thing I can think of is that both LA Red and Escudo have a decent amount of darker Virginia's and maybe higher on the Perique. Dunbar is lighter on the Perique and uses more light Virginias.
You gave me some good food for thought here and I feel an experiment coming on. But for that... I will need a meer ;-)

Mick-I got the samples today and must say the Mark Twain and MV-1000 has a marvelous smell although I haven't tried them yet. Thanks for the Escudo as well and I'll mix it with what I have left of that one. For some reason the SG Full Virginia flake wasn't a great hit initially but I'm going to give her another go at it.
Tastes can be very fickle so, I need to try several I've poo-pooed lately just to see if they muster up the same feelings. I don't' think too many will be able to exceed the Autumn Evening I so like...maybe Captain black comes close, of all things. I keep a pouch of that at work for lunch time smoke and it's always good if I let it dry about an hour beforehand.

Autumn Evening is good stuff indeed ! And you can actually buy it in bulk and jar it up. It's a little cheaper that way too ;-)

I finally got around to trying the Full Virginia Flake and it was so so but, the Mark Twain and MV-1000 are a definite like and may become part of my rotation...must be the Perique. Like a good steak, looked good, smelled good, taste great. :D

If any of you want to get rid of your nightcap, you can PM me. With just a bit of drying it is one of my favorites, Its seems to be blended perfectly and is very smooth. I just love it

Glad this thread was resurrected,

I picked up a tin each of NC & EMP and really tried to like them because everyone on here seems to love them but after a few bowls I decided to jar them both and I will revisit them in a year or so. Hopefully they will either be better due to aging or my tastes may change a bit by then.

To paraphrase an old Broadway play: It's like olives and sex, it takes a while to understand and enjoy it.
I think I'll take the olives...much less work.
