I decided to try yet a couple more tins of two different sort and neither really rang my chimes. The Dunhill Nightcap was awful and I didn't even get through the entire bowl before dumping it. The Dunbar I ordered with it was a bit better but to date nothing has beat Autumn Evening, Hafling's Leaf, and LA Red for sheer taste. Well, you never know until you try. All of FM series are on par with the Nightcap for me. Maybe my taste are just weird. I need to try the Dunbar again.
Has anyone else tuned the nose up at Nightcap? Surely it must be better than what I experienced.

I like Nightcap's sister EMP. Nightcap is just OK for me, though. Never had Autumn Evening, but I can vouch for LA Red and Halfling's Leaf. Those are excellent.

Enjoyed Nightcap when I smoked it,but haven't had any in years. It was never a "I gotta have it" blend.

I feel the same about nightcap and early morning pipe for that matter. Froggy on the town is the only of those I have, but I like it a lot.

I have had a few tins of Dunhill's NC to say try this;

1-Dry her for a good hour outta the tin if you haven't already

2-Smoke her in a pot-style bowl to give her room (all English

blends demand this). So not just a pot-shape but one that has a

larger chamber diam like 7/8", and about 1" chamber depth

3-Also try her in different pipes as my two above rules sometimes

have also failed...but the journey of finding the right bowl-to-blend

combination is like a treasure hunt....stay thirsty my friends ;-)

4-Try in different bowl materials; Clay, Meer, Corn cobs
After all that u might just not like the blend or you got a crappy

tin; I have noticed QC issues with all the great blends from time

to time...smoking hundreds of blends (they don't call me TheSmokinDragon

for nothing ;-)
Give some of C&D's Crooked Lane a try, outstanding flavors

as well as perhaps some L.J. Peretti's Royal and Omega blends

I could go on and on about great English blends but then as

Spartan calls it; Taste the rainbow ;-)

I tried it in my meer and it just didn't get it...maybe the Winslow tomorrow as it's probably my largest pipe. I didn't let it dry but maybe 15 minutes but will take some out for an hour's dry.
I think from what I've tried I tend to like the Virginia's more than most but FM will never work in any bowl for me.

Colcolt, your samples are on the way and if I'm not mistaking, I threw in some Escudo.
Dunbar is a Virginia / Perique, but more on the Perique than LA Red, which IMHO is milder and sweeter. Dunbar has more of the peppery spicy notes associated worth the Perique. Escudo will have even more of that ;-) so that doesn't bode well for you liking Escudo.if you end up not liking it, I'll trade ya. Waste not, want not.
I also packed up some MV-1000 for you, which is just a Virginia with a light topping. You may like that better. And yes, I do agree, Autumn Evening rocks ! Baron, if I make it on Friday I'll bring some. I got a tin open at the house.

I smoke Nightcap from tin to bowl with no drying time and love it. Doesn't matter what pipe I'm using it tastes great to me. I like Emp too but prefer the fullness of NC.

I like nightcap & early morning, but don't go out of my way to have them. Never dried them, and enjoy them in a larger bowl. I tend to enjoy stronger tobacco though.

Colcolt - sounds to me that you are one of the unfortunates who don't care for Latakia. Lat tends to evoke strong feelings - either you love it or you don't. NC is very prominent for its Latakia, and that's why I myself love it.
The important thing is to puff what appeals to you.

Nope. I'm with ya 100% Colcolt.
I love the lat. Hate the nightcap. It was very harsh for me. I'll always give it another go just to remind myself why I hated it so... But my memory is pretty clear and I had to dump it out as well.
Didn't like it.

I don't know...it smelled and tasted weird to me...sort of like smoking moss. I have other brands and types with Latakia and they didn't give the response NC did.

Interesting. I also tried Dunhill Nightcap recently and wasn't impressed. It reminded me too much of cigarette tobacco. In fact, years ago back when I used to smoke, I found myself in Hong Kong and bought myself a fine pack of Dunhill cigs.
The packaging was stellar and so were the cigs, but I don't want my pipe tobacco to taste the like that. Fine for a cigarette, not fine for a pipe for some reason.

Thank you , good sir. I just recently bought a tin of Escudo and actually I think it's much better than Dunbar. LA Red is definitely a favorite and ranks up there close to my beloved Autumn Evening. No, I have no problem with Escudo.

Good ! I'm glad you like Escudo, it really is a world of its own. Let me know if you want to get rid of the Dunbar and we can always arrange a trade.

colcolt,
It's interesting to me that you enjoy Autumn Evening. It is Red Virginia Cavendish with a Maple Aromatic flavoring. What is interesting is that Autumn Evening is part of my "Captain Bob's Pot O' Gold Mixture". Below is the description:
Brand: Cornell & Diehl

Blender: Tarler/Captain Bob Blend

Tin Description: This blend combines an excellent medley of premium Red and Lemon Virginia leaf, large Burley flakes and an element of Izmir Turkish. A special ingredient is a small amount of Red Virginia Cavendish with a very light Maple flavor. This is truly a satisfying and smooth all day smoke for the Virginia lover. Tastes like a Flake in a Traditional-cut!

Captain Bob's Pot O' Gold Mixture is only available from Cornell and Diehl by direct order from them.
As for Night Cap, it has been many years since I smoked it. I don't recall buying more than a tin of it. It was probably fine but not exceptional to me. C&D's "Good Morning" Blend is probably a dead-ringer for EMP (Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe Blend), I found that a bit on the bitter side. Certainly, not a bad Latakia Blend at all. But, it did not trip my trigger, either.

Captainbob. You are the hardest working drug dealer I've ever seen.
Props...
All your constant pushing has brain-washed me into adding your blend into my next TAD purchase.
If it is to my distaste I shall smite the earth you walk upon. Be warned good sir.

Spartan,
I don't want to appear to be "pushing". Perhaps, I really should back-off. I am not remunerated for the sale of my blends. My only interest is in blending and sharing (without a monetary reward). You can verify that with C&D. This is strictly a hobby and the love of tobacco blending for me. Please don't mis-understand my motives. Perhaps you are right-on, as I probably appear to some, as "really" promoting. I'll seriously consider your remarks because I do not wish to burn the rubber on my tires here, in any aggravating way. I'll leave that to NASCAR. I am a big fan of NASCAR, too! If you do try my C&D blends, I truly hope that you enjoy them. Thanks for your comment.
