I have been curious about morta since I first heard about it. I still kinda want one.

But my conclusion, from this forum and other articles, is that morta is an itch to scratch but it's not replacing any favorite briars. I haven't seen anyone whose favorite pipe was made from old bogwood.

So did I get it wrong? How do y'all like your mortas?

I really like my two morta pipes. They are both shapes that aren’t well represented in the rest of my collection, and I’ve reserved them for a couple of specific blends that I enjoy out of these pipes over other briars - primarily Semois and Lakeland heavy blends.

I don’t know if that’s much help, but to answer your question more specifically, morta won’t become a major player in my collection, although I don’t have anything negative to say about it.

Too many reports of them cracking. I own one just because I got a fantastic deal on the set that it was a part of but will not be buying another.

I didn’t care for the taste of them during the break in. I sold my couple and don’t plan on getting anymore.

I have a few mortas by several different makers.
It really was to scratch an itch.
I like them, but not enough to replace my briars

After the break-in, they don’t “taste” too different to briar.
I haven’t noticed any “sulphurous” notes in any of my mortas

The majority of my mortas feel lighter than briar. But I have 3 that feel much denser than briar.

Do they smoke hotter / heat up more than briar? I haven’t noticed any difference

If you are curious, I’d say get one. But don’t expect it will be too different to briar

Or you could just read this article found after a intensive 8 second search.

Yeah, that was one of the articles that was pushing Morta pipes into my shopping cart. My question is about your experience with Morta pipes in your rotation. Do you have one? Do you like it? Did it crack? Would you buy another one?

If you are going to get one, buy from either Moretti, or Davorin. Moretti’s pipes are also not expensive either, and he makes some that can be really nice lookers too.

Davorin, it’s always been my understanding, that he is like the master of morta.

Davorin’s does occasionally list available pipes to buy directly from off his site.

Altinok sells Davorin’s pipes.

I have several morta pipes and really like them.

A couple are Davorin's work and they're exceptionally lightweight.

One is from Sabina Santos and it is just an outstanding pipe. It's among my favorites in my collection.

I think morta (and meer) is just like briar in that raw material selection is very important to the final product and both require someone who knows how to select quality material.

no discussion for you! Next!

I too have been wondering about morta. Hope we can get some good opinions/experience. I'm kind of just curious about other woods in general. I guess there's some history to be learned there but it is kind of interesting that we don't see more variation. I wonder if briar was more like an evolution of pipe smoking rather than just another option or tool in the box.

I have a Christmas pipe from Mark Tinsky. The morta smokes well and it is one of my top 10. No cracks but the bead on the Rhodesian shape is a bit off. If I had the money I would have a few more but top makers and morta are priced out of my range in general. Get a good one and you might enjoy it.
