Oh, and just about anything and everything Michael Bay ever touched
A High School classmate is partners with Micheal Bay. At a reunion a few years back (at the end of summer), I asked if he had any films out. He say, yes one did pretty well....Transformers 2. I said "oh yes, I forgot about that one". He replied, "it's a piece of @hit, but people seem to love them".

I have no problem with profitable dreck; after all, nobody will hold a gun to my head and make me watch it. I understand the trade-off between commerce and literature. As Tolkien said when contemplating selling movie rights: "Art or Cash".

He does very well with Kabooms!. Give Bay something to kaboom! and he'll deliver the goods. Look at Pearl Harbor, or just the attack since the rest of the film is a waste of lifespan. Great sequence. But characters? Not in his universe.

I would duel you on Jackson. His obliteration of Tolkien's characters and their development as well as the butchering of the Hobbit en mass put him on my 'assault instantly upon meeting' list.
I suppose that doesn't carry over to directing though. He makes pretty film, I will give you that.

"I have seen "Flight of the Phoenix" and it is indeed a wonderful movie."
The engine-starting scene is one of the best (and, sadly, most underrated) bits of drama I have ever seen, and Mr. Stewart played it to perfection.

I can't give five. The top two are Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. The top two films for each are: Rear Window, Dial M for Murder, Citizen Kane, and Touch of Evil. Adding one more for each gives Vertigo and The Lady from Shanghai.
I especially like Film Noir, Westerns, and War Movies.

In no particular order:
Coppola--Apocalypse Now (not one of my favorite directors, but a brilliant movie)

Herzog--Fitzcarraldo

Bergman--Persona

Peckinpah--Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia

Welles--Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil

5 is not enough:

Billy Wilder--Sunset Boulevard

Kubric--2001, Dr. Strangelove

Kurosawa--Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood (honorable mention: Stray Dog)

Jack Hill--Coffy

F. W. Murnau--Nosferatu

Clint Eastwood - He's a good or better director than he is an actor.

Spielberg - Tons of good movies, hardly a dud in the bunch other than Hook.

Ridley Scott - His action movies have way more character development than you typically find.

Ron Howard - A few real gems that you probably didn't even know he directed.

John Hughes - Many of his "teen movies" still resonate with people today.
