I'd wager my stash of Semois and Margate that does not taste or smell like Margate that the term "navy flake" was invented by some chap in the Sales Department and that there is nothing nautical in its origin. A navy flake is simply what a manufacture chooses to call a navy flake; nothing more and nothing less. Having said that, my favorites are PS LNF and Newminster #400 SNF.

But what makes it a Navy Flake, even marketing-wise? I hate to refer to a tobacco type that is just a superflous marketing cloud.

To me...a navy would have to be what a sailor back in the day took with him -- so plug or rope. The rum casing makes sense as well, because -- sailors, rum ,sea chantys, etc. I'd just like to hear some advice on what an actual navy blend/tobacco (I won't use the term flake) is.

I'm suggesting there's no there there. But if that's makes you too uncomfortable, you should make up whatever criteria you like and stick with it. As the sailors say, any port in a storm.

Then that makes the question "what's your favorite navy flake?" ludicrous. My answer would be "orange" ;) If we can't define it, why refer to it? Don't take me too seriously, but we have an odd hobby in that we can't even define our own products that we are enthused with. English? Scottish? Navy? lol

My favorite navy flake is Newminster 400 Superior Navy Flake because it's the only tobacco that I have purchased in a one pound bulk quantity that has "navy" in its name!

MCClelland Dark Navy Flake. I'm VERY lucky to have a small stash of it. Nothing compares. However, I also love Stokkebye Navy flake and Capstan blue. Different animals, but also wonderful. Stock up while we can!

Plug, rope or prick.
