Doesn't seem like velvet would wear well if smoked regularly. Just the oil from your hands would mat it down and discolor it. I guess it was meant to be a special occasion pipe, not for daily use or yard work. It's an elegance that seems a little inelegant to me.

I’ve seen a few of those before…..very popular with sexual deviants & the French. I’m not saying that all the French are deviants but all the velvet clad pipes I’ve seen were made by Longchamp, a French company.😁

I bet Peterson came up with this after years of seeing pipes wrapped in leather, which was a major craze in the 1950's. You'd see two or three men with leather wrapped pipes on the commuter train platform in the morning. It was ultra-cool for about a decade. I don't think the velvet ever caught on in a big way, since no one on Forums has ever seen one before, but the leather-wrapped pipes also often had Meerschaum liners. It was a real "thing."

The only thing comparable today that I can think of is those pipes with colorful decal paint jobs done by Nording, interesting to look at, but not something that would age particularly well in my opinion. I love my non-decal Nordings.

This one, indeed has a meerschaum internal.

Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but....

Leather covered pipes and such are done that way because the wood is so full of flaws that all the fills in the world couldn't help. And the meerschaum liner, which is not "block" meerschaum but pressed from scraps, was also to cover flaws and help sales of what would otherwise be a discarded junker. There may be exceptions, but I've never seen one. puffy
