But my wife has organised for one of the boys to come around to help me do an audit of my wine cellar and cigars

I don't know how it is in OZ, but in the US, about 67% of the adult population has done no estate planning, no will, no trust, no nothing. Essentially this amounts to a massive gift to States and their corrupt probate systems to loot your holdings after you've fallen off the twig.
After doing some research on just how badly ones loved ones can be stripped by various state ptobate legal systems, I did my trust about 20 years ago. Properly executed, a trust can offer great protection against estate taxes. Or, you can buy some lawyer another Maserati.

I honestly don't care what happens to any of my stuff.

My pipes aren't worth much of anything, the most expensive being $200 and least being $80 when new, and I have just the 5 (not counting my slowly growing collection of sub-$20 clays). They can be sold at an estate sale, sold/donated to antique places. I'd rather them be sold or donated than to be trashed though.

I probably will stipulate that none of my siblings are to get anything of mine, because they're all dicks. I don't want my wife to have to deal with them fighting over who gets what. Also, I just really hate them. That's all I care about—that they get nothing—otherwise do whatever with it.

While true, it's not something my family or children often see me doing. It's either at work, a 7/12 shift, or very early in the morning when everyone else is asleep. Memorable heirlooms from me that they would connect with me would be my collection of crystal skulls, knives, barbering tools, and firearms that are regularly out on display.

If Embers wants to give his holdings the toss when he has shuffled off his mortal coil, that's his business.

Personally, I've left instructions for the disposition of my collection in my Will, as I'd like the proceeds to benefit my beneficiaries, and that's my business.

Lastly, some of my pipes have some small historical significance in this tiny arcane corner of the universe, so trashing them would go against my interest in the history of British pipes.

My pipes and tobacco are a monetary drop in the bucket compared to what my kids and wife will be left after my passing. Fortunately my cremation has already been paid for and final expenses are to be taken from an account that only my lawyer is aware of leaving the rest of my holdings and insurance benefits for my family's use.

Wouldn't you want the thousands of dollars that could be raised by selling them go to your children, or a charity?

They have nothing to worry about and monetary gain from something unhealthy is something I will not stand for. Tobacco is a habit that so far I've discouraged my family from and my mistakes need to follow me to the grave. A percentage of my gains already goes to several charities including Love of Paws and local animal shelters.

Our two sons have taken matters into their hands and arranged meetings with a financial adviser for us
My wife has had a recent health scare - luckily everything turned out fine. But it really put the wind up them that we had no retirement or estate planning in place.

We talked about it. Of the 30 or so pipes I have right now, 5 are earmarked for heirlooms. The rest, and whatever tobacco I have left, are to be auctioned off on the best platform the executors see fit with the proceeds going to the National Park Foundation. Instead of thinking of me when they see a pipe, off rather they think of me when they see trees.

No more than I would a well made ratchet. As well made as my Mac Tools are, they're still just tools.
