And sometimes you can have the talent, and the work ethic, and still not succeed because of other factors. We like to think we live in perfectly meritocratic societies, but one look at the British Cabinet shows you what bull that is, stuffed as it is full of privately educated, upper-class white men. Or look at the phonomena of political dynasties. Was George Bush Jnr really the most hard working, and talented man, out of a pool of a quarter of a billion, or was he just there because his father was there before him? Seems obvious. But this extends further down the ladder. Fact is, most people end up doing jobs very similar to their parents, whether they be Presidents, or janitors. Not to say this is universally the case, to quote the Texan philosopher Rick Roderick, it is not that you are never surprised, but you are just rarely surprised.

I was talking to a dentist I went to awhile ago, & asked him about his background. He said he’d been in a high energy particle physics research program at MIT. One day, he said, he looked at the guy to the left & saw that he was a genius. He then turned & looked at the guy on his right, & saw that he was a genius too. “I knew I wasn’t a genius, & would only end up as another drone doing routine, boring tasks on this industrial scale research project. So, I thought I better look into doing something else.” he said. He switched over to Harvard Dental School. (He was the best dentist I ever had & I’d still be going to him if I hadn’t moved.)
My point is obvious. Yes, there are many fields where hard work & determination will get you where you want to go. There are also other fields & levels of achievement where that alone isn’t enough.

What an interesting thread.

Mount Everest is littered with dead people, so many it’s now called Rainbow Canyon because of all the different colors of high altitude suits exposed with the copses, who had ambition and worked hard. It is also the place where people’s dreams are realized and crushed.

Next May is the climbing season, and you better believe the route will be filled.

Some people crush dreams and some people dream, then there are people that do.

I guess most folks have never met those three people.

Regarding the ancient mantra of encouragement for young people, you can do anything you set your mind to, it is a kind, generous, and misleading saying. Most of growing up is finding out what your talents and strong points are, which means finding out all of the dozens of activities at which you have limited or no capabilities. I had the dexterity and focus to be a brain surgeon, but I didn't have the algebra through calculus proficiency nor the chemistry aptitude to get to med school. I could have hammered my head against the wall and maybe even graduated med school, but I would have been a master of ambition not medicine. The poor patients. No, you have to set your mind to what you can do well, whether it is socially glorified or just what you thoroughly enjoy doing. I think it's cruel to set kids up for dreams they can't attain or that would make them unhappy if attained.
I absolutely agree with your thoughts. It has been said that at birth, as much as 80% of a child's personality is already in place...I believe this is meant to direct us into what we were meant to do with our lives. Try and fail in order to learn? Absolutely! The greatest failure is the the failure to try.

And….. there are people who take lemons and make lemonade.

There are always ”types” of people…

Why not be content to be the best person you can be?

I meet these people all the time and they are a blessing to be around.

Don‘t you agree?

I 100% agree, the tone of this thread isn’t going that way. To me the tone is that of I’m oppressed because I couldn’t do this or that.

The only reason I’m so positive is all I see is death and destruction. Reading about some failed dreams is trite.

I’ve never discounted effort. But I guess I’m an outlier.

When my oldest son was 13 he came to work with me, I owned a landscape company, and he “worked” with me. I decided I’d teach him how to work like my father taught me. Not easy not soft.

I told him if he put his hands in his pockets I’d see his pockets closed. He’s an adult with a family now and he’s never wanted for work because of his work ethic.

In case someone thinks it’s been easy for me, don’t assume what you don’t know. I’ve eaten more government ham, cheese and canned peanut butter than I care to remember.

Not everyone has the genetic makeup to be an athlete. As a simple example, girls don’t have the genetic makeup to compete with guys, outside of a few sports like rock climbing, swimming, and golf.

Many more examples I can give. But most people can do most things in life. I do NOT agree with this whole, “People that are rich are just lucky.” There is a combination of IQ and hard work. IQ is the biggest indicator of future income. I agree with Ash that this idea can lead to laziness and pouting.

So many factors.

If you are reading that in my posts, you are the one bringing it. Of course we should all strive to be tge best at something, the best we can be. It would be nice to sum that up in a motto. But, all I was saying was that, the specific, “you can be anything you want to be is flawed.”
I in no way said anything, anything about being suppressed. You are binging that to the conversation, which is outside the realm of what I will discuss. And, it drags the carcass of the thread towards politics.

Words have power and meaning. Be the best you can be. Be all that you can be. Reach your potential. Is a far cry from “oh poor me,” “I’m oppressed.”

I mean, feel free to tell people that they can be anything they want to be. I just posted my logical opinion based on what I’ve seen in the world.

Cheer on those who accomplish great things. Be inspired. Those things only make sense to do.
