If you're going to do it, just go out there to the smoking area, smoke and act like you belong there. You'd be surprised how well that works. All other people will just see a smoker with other smokers. The ones that want to be an asshole usually look for someone unsure of themselves. If someone does break through your guard, make 'em get the cops to test your pipe or tell them to go to Hell. I'd take a good look at actual school policy and whether it actually describes briar pipes as paraphanalia. A lot of the a-holes who make a big deal about stuff rely on your lack of knowledge to make it work.
