I am really glad that you managed to solve the problem. Is that possible that you cleaned your pipe right after smoking it? It happened to me once before. I had a very cheap pipe with bowl coating, after smoking it I didn't wait and started cleaning the pipe. The bowl coating was falling apart and it was taking some small particles from the wood with itself. I also have a new Peterson with bowl coating that I haven't smoked yet. I wonder if I should smoke it or remove the coating before smoking.

I hate to say it but YOU screwed that Peterson Pipe up itself, too bad it is a nice looking pipe.

Peterson has generated some complaints on the finishing of chambers. This shouldn't happen with a name-brand pipe at this price level. I have a number of different brands from different countries, and nothing like this ... ever.

This is what happens when someone listens to the nonsense that they should "remove the bowl coating". This is pipe abuse, not poor pipe quality.

So, I Dremeled on low and all was well -- then
And that's when it went sideways....
I've found that the Peterson pre-carb is easily removed with alcohol on a cloth, screwed into the bowl (which is also why I no longer buy the lower end Petersons which are dip-stained)

Pure junk!
Of course any good quality pipe should be able to handle a good going over with a power tool without any adverse effects. I'm sure most would improve with a little finesse while blind folded and wearing oven mitts, of course a half inch hammer drill would be better.

I'm with Davet on this one. I don't see this as a quality control issue on Peterson's part. This was caused by a mistake by the original poster. No offense, Benjamin. My advise... simply leave the precarb alone or don't buy pipes with a precarb. Personally, I'm ok with both precarbed bowls and clean bowls. Although I prefer a clean wood bowl, precarbs are not a deal breaker for me.

I'm guessing you could have just left the pipe alone and let it build up carbon in the bowl and would have been just fine after several smokes. I imagine you could have contacted Peterson and returned the pipe to them or the retailer and possibly exchanged it for a new one, or they may have given you some different advice that would have corrected the problem. You have to be careful what advice you use as your experience may differ from someone else, and the person giving the advice may or may not know exactly what they're doing. However, if you're happy with the pipe then so be it. Enjoy your smokes.
