The artwork on those old tins is superb. I would love a collection like that sitting on a shelf. Good to see the Gallahers Rich Dark Honeydew. This was a tobacco my dad smoked, but from the later version plain tins

With regard to the tobacco wars - I think Duke was eventually sent packing back to the States with his tail between his legs, and he had to hand back control of Ogdens. Interesting that Gallahers never joined the new conglomerate, as Tom Gallaher himself was chairman of the original co-operative set up to oppose the Duke takeover plans. I suppose Gallaher had the strength to go it alone as when he built the factory in Belfast, it was the largest tobacco factory in the world.
I wrote a blog post a while back explaining my family's history with Gallaher tobacco which also brushed on Tom Gallaher's role during the "tobacco wars".
