I'm reluctant about pipe starter kits. This partly illustrates why. I think going to the trouble of buying individual items makes you think about them and improves your chances of getting better items, this time or next time.
Well said, mso489, well said indeed. I find this to be true of most bundles of any kind. I run into it a lot in kitchen equipment. I hate seeing people being gifted kitchen knife sets for instance.

So, I reamed and cleaned, and it appears that the divot is, in fact, in the wood. After letting the pipe sit, I also noticed that there is now a 'burned' flavor (even after cleaning). I still haven't decided if I will just smoke it anyway, and pray for cake.
But, all is well, because I received these in the mail today:

I absolutely love the sandblast on this year's pipes.
There's also a Peterson's 2015 (68) Brandy in the mail, that I may get a few days after Christmas.
My wife can be pretty spiffy; I burn up her pipe, so she buys me three (for Christmas) to replace it.
I hope everyone else's holiday is as wonderful as mine.

WOW Mr. Deal. What a fabulous set of pipes for Christmas. If I were you I would wait until morning and torch her car in the drive way, you might just get a Ferrari
Let us know how they smoke please :)

Jeffrey, just a notion and I'll mind my own business, but could you turn over one of your own pipes to your wife, clean it up a little, and give her a dependable briar, pre-broken-in and certified smoke-worthy? It might be easier than letting a pipe leave the household, and it would underscore your sharing this interest.

Before smoking the Petersons I would make sure that a fluffy pipe cleaner runs through it with no issues. The two Petersons you bought are very nice looking, I hope they smoke great for you and congrats on your latest additions to your collection.
My first pipe was a Savinelli Lineau Piu 5 Apple shaped( retail was 155.00 in 1999 but got 20% off because it was my buddies shop). The pipe had a nice open draw and it smoked freaking great. It showed me what a good pipe uas supposed to smoke like so I had a baseline to compaare other pipes too( although I did not know that at the time). Two of my next purchases was a 95.00 Jensen Bent Billiard that smoke like shit. It burned hotter than hell and if I had not had that Sav to compare it too, I woukd have thought all pipes smoked that hot. My next pipe I bought was a real pretty Nording bent Dublin( bought at Moms on Broadway in NYC, that went for 165.00) but it did not take a pipe cleaner all the way and smoked wet( had no idea what to look for in a pipe, but owner should have known he was selling me a clunker) , again the Savineli gave me a baseline or I would have thought all pipes smoked thaat wet.
The next pipe I was back at my buddies shop and bought a Winslow C grade that retailed for 500.00 got my 20 percent off and then realized that a great looking pipe could also smoke great. Did it smoke hundreds of dollars better than my first Sav, no but it did smoke better and I loved looking at it and I enjoyed it for a very long time.
I have always recommended to a new smoker to get a nice Savineli to start with so they can grasp what a good pipe is supposed to smoke like, starting with a cheap basket pipe I think can really turn off a newcomer to pipe smoking, spend a hundred bucks and enjoy that first smoke.

Let's be fair; she's worth two Ferraris.
All is well that ends well.
And then some!
Pipe Mud the spot?
I'm thinking about it.

Splendid idea! We already have a 'decent' briar picked out for her (I may have nudged her in the right direction, a bit) that we'll pick up, once we're able. However, until then, I may grab a nice dependable smoker from my collection, and let her cut her teeth on it. Thanks for the suggestion!

A Savinelli is actually what we decided to go with for her replacement pipe.
Thanks to everyone for all the wisdom, advice, and suggestions!
