This is an impressive site.

At the risk of being flamed for it, I will say that it gives me hope in this crazy time in which we live, that so many people can be so involved and knowledgeable about something as totally unnecessary as smoking pipes.

I had uncles who smoked pipes in my young years, and I myself have smoked a pipe many hundreds of times, but the pipes I smoked did not have tobacco in them, if you know what I mean. Those days are behind me, except on rare occasion, and at age 53 I have recently acquired my first tobacco pipe. I'm enjoying it greatly. It's an evening thing for me on workdays and a few bowls a day on off days. My first pipe is a tobacco shop cheapo stuffed with Captain Black Gold, but I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of three more, higher quality items along with four higher-end tobaccos. I've been a cigarette smoker and on-an-off tobacco chewer for decades, so I'm no stranger to the world of tobacco, such as my experience has dictated.

I'm privileged to be in your company, sirs, and I appreciate your knowledge and passion for something so classic, time-honored, and gentlemanly. I'll read and lurk far more than I post, but I thank you all for your time, experience, and insight.

Many of us just see it as a way to consume tobacco and really don't see it as a hobby whereas some do. As for gentlemanly, maybe, but anyone, anywhere can smoke a pipe.

Unhinged, that is a most gracious introduction to Forums, and welcome aboard from central North Carolina, U.S. There is a staggering amount of expertise on pipe and pipe tobacco related subjects here on Forums. Some threads just sound like chat, and then someone will divulge a depth in pipe carving, pipe history, pipe brand history, pipe restoration, tobacco growing industrial and home, and so on. I nearly always learn something. Also, it is an extremely interesting crew of people, truly international, with all kinds of career and cultural backgrounds. One of my small niches in all this might be the glories of low priced pipes -- some are just cheapie, and others give as good a smoke as any, though I also appreciate up-market pipes and own a few of those. Again, welcome.

All of the time. That's why I take great delight in replying fill, light, and smoke. Seems many think it just has to be overcomplicated. My main point was that anyone can. It's not an unachievable task
I think many new people watch videos or read posts that make the tobacco or process seem rather romantic, which can lead people to overthinking it.

Some things just take mindless repetition.

I think you have collectors, hobbyists and hard for smokers. And combinations. I'm first a hard core smoker smoking 5 to 7 bowls per day. There's certainly folks here that smoke well more than that. I do enjoy acquiring nice artisan pipes so I guess I'm also a bit of a collector. I'd still enjoy smoking my 5 to 7 bowls per day though if I were using a few cobs to smoke with.

This. Truer words have never been spoken. Once you learn to just get after it and make it about enjoyment vs. “doing it right,” it becomes way more fun.

I couldn’t believe when I first started and looked online to find that there were like a dozen “proper” ways to put tobacco into a pipe. I realize there’s some importance around how the bowl is loaded, but my god. At the end of the day, just enjoy it. Life’s too short to get worked up about which method you use to load a pipe!

Also, welcome to the forum! Tons of knowledge floating around here from some truly great folks!

Don't call anyone "sirs" or "sir" or "madam" on here...their heads are big enough already! And you shouldn't feel privileged, just psychopathic. Here are some of the characteristics of a psychopath and people on these threads fill at least 1/2 of these slots at any one time: glibness/superficial charm, grandiose sense of self-worth, need for stimulation/proneness to boredom, pathological lying, conning/manipulation, lack of remorse/guilt, shallow affect, callousness/lack of empathy, parasitic lifestyle, promiscuous sexual behavior, early behavior problems
