Did the rondel fall off, or was it just a stamp?
To the best of my knowledge. Stamped stem logos preceded rondelles at GBD. The same is true of the BBB diamond. That could muddy the dating of early and late GBD/BBB pipes, but the differences are usually easy enough to spot.

On the silver hallmark banded pipes I've seen, they have all either had no stem logo or the rondell (my '37 has both). I don't recall a silver banded pipe with a stamp. Sometimes, when the rondell falls off, it leaves a stamped like impression in the vulcanite (but as George pointed out, a mount hole as well).

Good catch. I forgot that the old stuff was stamped. Hell, I even have one.
This is it. Dates from 1880-1890 according to Jacques Craen:

In regards to the hallmarks on that GBD, I found something! A while back I noticed this one particular hallmark site had a tobacconists section, and this has the hallmark info relevant to the GBD pipe, with more defined picks of a nearly identical hallmark and the AO referenced to Adolphe Oppenheimer.

And I found an explanation for the odd hallmarks, apparently London used different hallmarks when the silver was imported into the UK, and the odd 'U' shape mark plus the decimal standard was used.

Prices are up, agreed. I saw a smoked, normal old custombilt go for $142. WTF!

Usually if I can get $40 or give $40 it has got to be amazing.
