I thought this one might get close to $600. But, $921?? That's nuts.

To top it all off, this one looks like the stem has been flattened a little (perhaps some meat taken off to remove teeth dents near the button?).

It almost makes me want to list mine (which I think is in better shape). Nah. But, I do now smoke it sparyingly...

Yup, definitely some ham-handed dent removal went down with that specimen. Meaning---strictly as a collectible---the pipe is close to worthless. Originality and condition is everything with Old School Britwood collectors. Or, at least, it used to be.
Looks like the new guys either don't know any better, or value other things for some reason. :?:

Al, since you steered me towards Brit-Wood I've seen many pipes go for big money, but I've also seen pipes hammered by heavy handed resto work still go for big money. This ain't Kansas (kaywoodie) buying anymore. Amateurs can get beaten to death.

Ashdigger, You speak the plain truth. The Kaywoodie market will throw a couple of haymakers your way and perhaps box your ears. The Britwood boys will bludgeon you balmy with a blackthorn. Someone took a thumping tonight.

Well.......... I can't take credit for a good memory. I was simply searching google for the Comoy's 499 shape, to see how an "unmolested" stem SHOULD look like....... and stumbled on it..........

I wish my memory was that good.......... too many years, too many beers.......... :D

Beefeater, There is still time to edit your post. Bask in the glory and do nothing to dispel our belief in your superior abilities.

The "restoration" of that pipe are so obvious it's hard to imagine they went unrecognized. I'm with George on this one. The buyer had better have other reasons for spending that kind of money because the condition doesn't justify it. But all that said, the results certainly make Al happy.

Did the rondel fall off, or was it just a stamp?
Every one I ever salvaged or transferred had a drilled hole underneath it (so pressing in while heated would caused the rubber to collapse inward to grab the rondel's edge).
Hard to image that GBD would but a silver band on a low end stamped piece, though.
No doubt that the stem is original.

The Silver hallmarks look suspicious to me...... I don't recall English maker's using the 925 stamp..........

Edit: Yes, now I do----

Sure, there are people who gladly pay $3,000 for a pair of slacks, you know, designer made bespoken in highest end material. The rest of us rag around in our $15 Wranglers. Who's happier? Flip of the coin. I'm sure for the money (900 plus bucks) you can buy three or four magnificent artisanal pipes, with a little scouting and bartering. But if you have on your $3,000 slacks, that's not what you want.

This was also my first thought when I saw it. Almost sent you a PM about it, but I wasn't going to be a bidder. As with any estate pipe, always look very closely. If something doesn't look right, more often than not, it probably isn't.
