I wouldn't buy it, to answer your question.
But I'd be really curious to hear what you know about Barry Jones and how you got the information. A lot of collectors have been wondering what happened to him and whether he's been working for the latest incarnation of Upshall or not.

Chris Askwith is on my list for this set. He and I already chatted about a pipe. Even put a deposite down so when I am ready we will start.
Info I got about Barry Jones is only what I was told by Karen Ezrati via email. Prior to this all I got from them was He was on vacation and Could not make pipes. I have been trying to get a bespoke Upshall for around 10 years.

"As regards Barry's retirement, he is still working part time so for now we continue as usual, just less production. We did have Barry training another person, though Barry is such a unique carver it will be hard to replace him.
We have a considerable stock set aside for when he is no longer turning.
Speak soon, Karen "

Personally, I wouldn't buy yesterdays paper from Upshall, but to each his own.
I'd find a decent Upshall in the estate market. Stems were never their strong suit. One member here, who imported their pipes for years to the US says they did not use hand-cut stems. I'd find the Upshall shape you want and the stem master, aka George Dibos to put a proper stem on it I'm not certain he can do a JU stamp, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could.

Unless the pipe is exactly what I want I would not buy even discounted. I would never be happy with the purchase.

That's interesting, tarheel. Thanks for letting us know what you'd heard.
Also, I'd consider Al's advice on this.

As a one-time thing, or rarity, buying a pipe and then revising it in a fairly major way by refitting it with a different style stem at considerable expense, might make sense, if the briar is one you love and the remodeling will make it perfect in your mind. Usually most find it satisfying to shop until you find pipes that are brought together by the artisan or manufacturer in a way that feels excellent to you. That's the satisfying way to buy a pipe. But I loved fitting a few cobs with Forever stems, and find the "new" pipes extremely satisfying, so I get the idea. It not the way I usually buy pipes.
