Worst Pipe Tragedy

Hey friends, in light of recently finding a crack in the mortise on my Radice, I began thinking about the unfortunate experiences that others may have had with their prized pipes. I know that many of you have had much worse occurrences than mine. So, if you feel inclined, share with us what was your most unfortunate pipe tragedy! And, were you able to remedy the tragedy?

My worst experience is the disappearance of a favorite pipe, a Searock.

Will the stem still hold with the crack in the mortise? Will the pipe benefit with a nice silver repair band?

Yeah it still fits...I'm kind of shopping around to weigh my options for having a band put on...and that's awful that you lost that pipe!

I was keeping my little cased SM Frank (I think from the 30s) in my Michigan garage during the winter. I pulled it out and smoked it right away and it developed a hairline crack up and down the left side of the bowl.

I broke an amber stem on a very old and very nice pipe that I have chosen to entirely forget about until now. I forget the make, model and shape, but I was pretty upset at the time. Now, it's a "meh", compared to the daily true tragedies that surround us all. Yesterday I learned that the woman that has cut my hair for 22 years passed away at age 41, leaving a husband and two sons, ages 10 and 12. She gave our daughter her first haircut, and many more after that, doting over her as she gave her beautiful French braids. She was the kind of person that could brighten any day, make anyone smile and laugh.

I enjoy pipes and tobaccos because they bring me pleasure. If something goes awry, so be it, I move on and forget about it.

Yup, pipe don’t compare to true losses like that.

I lost my mother when I was 11. I was the oldest of four kids.

As far pipes go, I remember shearing off the stem on a Nording in 1975. Never heard of such a thing as a pipe repairman. So, I threw it away.

I obliterated the shank of my first briar (a bbb from the 80's) when I tried to adjust the stem while smoking it. Wasnt experienced enough, didnt let it cool enough, put pressure the wrong way and it shattered in 4 pieces... ah well, learned a bit, allthough I like the pipe a lot.

Pipe burned out while I was smoking in a gale. That's how I know that sea captains don't really smoke in a storm while clinging on to the helm. The wind would stoke the flame too much.

The day I dropped my 4 club Becker Dublin getting out the car ,completely snapping the shank in two. Even worse it was the first day I had it....

There are no pipe tragedies, just a broken pipe.

well if you start a huge fire and it kills a few people that would be a tragedy. Always make sure your pipe is out before tapping out the dottles.

None come to mind. I generally don’t mind if I break or lose a pipe. I just purchase another.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re going to throw a Weaver away please, I beg you, let me know! I will drive to Kentucky to pick it up.

I'll let you know if I ever break one but that's a bit of a strong reaction for just a pipe.
