....is twisting the stem off and seeing a moldy black filter hanging there. This calls for some super-heated alcohol....maybe an exorcism.

Hah I disagree. I'd much rather know it was there and clean it myself than having an unscrupulous seller removing it just prior to shipping and being totally unaware and not cleaning properly!

Gross! i hate filter pipes and unfortunately own 2 (stanwells)which i do like aesthetically, but i just need to get a 9mm adapter, which i have yet to do. Do not mind the brigham rock maple system, though, and still have yet to own/smoke a sav so couldn't comment there. Those filters do get disgusting though, i couldn't imagine leaving one in there for an extended period of time.

To estate or not to estate?
Just like anything else used, buyer beware!
I usually buy my cars from the dealership, same with pipes. On the otherhand if I get a chance on a great used car I'll buy it and I'd do the same with a pipe. Never done ebay though and stories like this don't exactly give me the push to try!
Oh yeah, and Anglesey, What's the other half?

I realize estate pipes from ebay are not for everyone, but I find these a challenge. I've got an old Amphora poker coming in a few days with a cracked stem. I want to see if I can fix it and band it. It's cheap entertainment.

Yep, retort that bad-boy... maybe even dip the stem in clorox.... lol I wouldn't put it in the clorox long - but people have used it instead of oxyclean to get rid of oxidation - but that clorox will kill the mold.

So here is the former gross pipe newly transformed into a sweet, alcohol flavored collectible. It's stamped "Champion" on the bottom.
While cleaning it up I was surprised to see the bowl is meer-lined. Not a bad pipe after all for only five bucks.

See I love cleaning up old stuff for use. Being pipes or razors... It is just really fun to me. When I read this yesterday I didn't comment because I really had nothing to contribute (not that now is any different but oh well LOL) but when my ebay estate arrived today I removed the stem and saw a filter and my heart dropped. Luckily it wasn't moldy though!! But it instantly made me think of this post. That is a nice looking pipe you have there though, nice find!

Redbeard, I knew an old lady many years ago who did astrological readings. She told me I like to create order from chaos. So I guess in my case it a Virgo thing. :)
Last week I posted about an LHS pipe that had a stem I couldn't remove. Well, I ended up shattering the stem trying to pry it off. I didn't feel badly about it at all. Just another chance to see if I could fix it, which I finished doing today.
This other Purex LHS pipe came in the same lot as the Champion:

I'm really liking my LHS pipes. I have four of them now.
Oh, and this also came in the same lot. I don't really know what to do with it. Paint it white?
