Working My Way Through Burley Blends

Peretti's blends are good, and some quite mild, like #52 or currently available Thanksgiving Day. I had second thoughts about C&D Billy Budd and Old Joe Krantz (I'm smoking at the moment) -- much too strong if you are just starting with burley. My Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic was a good idea.

Can’t believe no one mentioned Wessex Burley Slice yet. I prefer that one to Solani’s and it being out of stock all the time, I suspect others enjoy it as well.

Yes Wessex Burley Slice is a great burley flake though I do prefer ABF marginally. In fact, I think I'll have a 50-50 Wessex Burley Slice and ODF right now! OP, another nice burley (kentucky) and VA blend is Solani's Silver Flake 660.

I started with the OTC blends sort of as a baseline. If you want to go that route, I think Carter hall and Granger are both great, and would make a good intro since they are both fairly mellow.

You might look up the blends mentioned here on TR and see which sound good to you from the description.
While the advice to try OTCs is good, you might go for those with the least amount of topping or additives just to get a feel for the leaf and see if you enjoy its range of flavors.

These are easily available, reasonably price, and easy to smoke owing to a lack of complex toppings. If you want to just leap into Burley, these are good options.
There are many more options, some of which are flavored extensively (Irish Flake) and some of which are dark fired (smoked, like Kendal Kentucky). But for a straight up introduction, the above might work best.

In the OP, you mentioned enjoying a few Balkans. That being the case, you might enjoy 1 of the 2 blends I smoke, C&D Odessa. Burley, perique, oriental and latakia, all very balanced as I taste all 4, probably in the order I gave. My other blend is the already mentioned ODF.

I enjoy Burleys in this order HH Old Dark Fired, Solani Burley Flakes, and Wessex Burley Slices. All straight forward tobacco taste. Each with its own special direction.

Just wanted to post again on this thread and thank everyone for their recommendations. I've been slowly working my way through the list as I can(some of them are a bit hard to get a hold of), and have really enjoyed everything that I've tried from C&D, and Peterson University is a definite favorite now too. I give Lane Ready Rubbed a try and enjoyed that also, perhaps a bit too mild though.

Velvet.. I am not sure what to think of this. First sniff of it in the pouch and I was immediately reminded of Blue Cheese dressing. I am still occasionally smoking it, but even the smoke kind of reminds me of blue cheese :D

I like C&D's Big n Burley well enough on its own but it's fun to play with as well. Try adding a little cigar leaf, perique, or more latakia to this blend.
