I'd recommend rubbing out before drying. And maybe dry more than you have. And, yes on the light touch on loading.

with flakes I really extra light it like a big huge cherry. let it sit for a few seconds and it seems to not need relights.

Seconding this. I started doing this as a pissed off "take THAT" to my tobacco when I couldn't get it going, and it seemed to work pretty well.

yeah it really does. And with flakes it doesn't really get them burning too hot. It ends up being a pretty gentle smoke.
