Wonky tastes

In my extremely brief foray into this wonderful hobby, I have had some very divergent experiences. Started with Escudo, FMOTT, C&D Bayou Night, C&D Autumn Evening, Orlick Golden Slices and a corn cob pipe. I've had some brief stretches where I felt I was actually smoking a pipe and a majority of train wreck experiences where I was fighting the pipe the whole time. The brief stretches were sublime enough to have me hooked nonetheless. The interesting thing I've found is how varying my tastes and experiences have been in such a short time.
I had Escudo as my first bowl and hated it. Then, moved to FMOTT and bayou night and loved them. I was convinced I was obviously an English Blend man and that was that. Then today, I begin the day with a bowl of golden slices that is off the charts. My whole mindset was that I would have the opportunity to have two bowls today and the golden slices would be the throw away to the FMOTT. Boy was I wrong.
Am interested in hearing if this roller coaster is common. Certainly intrigued about what I will find enjoyable going forward.

Hey, your expectations are through the roof. I think a sampler pack or two would be good. I think 4noggins has

several packs with just 1 oz. of each tobacco, with an appropriately moderate price. Also, you can get blends in

bulk in one or two ounce packages. Go easy. Try around with some of the milder blends before you jump in

with stronger blends. Don't throw away anything you have on hand, just store it in canning jars to keep it fresh.

You may come back around and discover it later when you are more in touch with your taste in these matters.

I don't blame you for feeling jerked around. You've hit the golden age of vast numbers of blends, most of them

very good, so it's not easy to pick and choose. Remember, your taste won't exactly match anyone else's. Be

patient; slow down a little bit; buy in small quantities for now; don't give up on a blend after one or two smokes.

Above all, enjoy the journey. You'll hit several blends you'll like for at least several years. Keep trying around.

Sure is, deuce, especially when you're starting out and haven't been conditioned to one type of tobacco. The good news--the really good news--is that there are so many different tobaccos that you're going to have a real blast sampling all of them. Each type, subtype, and indeed each tobacco has something to offer, and they're all waiting for you. In time you may find yourself seeking a particular type, and finally a specific blend, but there's plenty of time for that.

The roller coaster is very common. Sometimes blends taste better, due to any variety of influence, from the pipe you smoke it out of, to what you ate or drank that day, to how much you've been smoking. You started with some great blends, welcome to the club!!

I've found this true for myself. I've only found that I will never smoke again. It was an aro that I got as a sample. Your taste will develop, I hated Escudo the first time I smoke it, now I love it. I also find that blends that I love don't taste good at times like yesterday. Hang in there and try blends more than once.
