The hint helped! She wasn't before my time, afterall. The pic looked early 50's, but was late 60's when I started watching the nightly news.
Here's a quote from her NY Times obit, rather apropos for this thread:

"In a debate over equal rights for women, she once recalled, a male legislator said: "I just don't like this amendment. I've always thought of women as kissable, cuddly and smelling good." My Grandmother smoked a pipe. She smoked a straight corncob with Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco. I also know of a woman at my job who smokes pipes as well.
