Over the years I've given pipes to several people in hopes they would become pipe smokers.None of them ever have. They also have never returned the pipes.I wish I had those pipes back since they aren't being smoked.I guess I'm just too nice to ask for them though.

It happens, but maybe sometime in the future they'll give it another shot. I ended up giving my step-dad and my brother a pipe. They've smoked them quite a bit. My brother-in-law and his new wife, we gave them a pipe each and we're waiting to see just how much they'll smoke them. He's a cig smoker and trying to cut them out, but has always smoked extremely light tobaccos.

I've given away a lot of pipes . Most though have gone to guys that already smoke pipes. I figure that it's an investment. Never know when someone who got a freebie will buy a nice hand made.

I have given away a lot of pipes the last few years to servicemen over seas in Iraq and Afganistan. Just the letters and emails back to me have made it worth it. I know some won't end up smoking them but they sure do appreciate the gesture anyway.

I just cleaned up an estate pipe for a friend and plan on giving it to him next time I see him. He's only 19 and smoking cigerettes. I'd rather have him jump ship and join the pipe world. Lord knows he'll enjoy it way more.

So far, only one of my sons and one of my son-in-laws; if they are gonna smoke, better a pipe than a 2 pack a day habit. It's like books: it's a gift, never lend them out. “Never lend books, for no one ever returns them; the only books I have in my library are books that other folks have lent to me” - Anatole France

Recently gave a couple nice vintage pipes to a young submariner that started smoking pipes a short while ago and I figured I'd put him on the right track to quality that didn't cost a fortune and would enhance his smoking pleasure. Just a few weeks later the Navy passes a no Pipe Smoking policy on submarines. Poor kid. I know how much I enjoyed the pipe was I was a sailor a long time ago. Hopefully he'll get some pleasure with the pipes and tobacco when they pull in to port after their 6 month deployments.

i have given only one away, but i know my friend is smoking it daily.

i have had a couple of people gift me some old pipes and throw in bonuses with trades; these, without thinking, have become some of my favorites and most smoked.

Never give anything away you hope to see again. It's a good philosophy for money, books, and pipes. All that ends up doing is ruining relationships with people you value.

There are only a couple guys I'd give a pipe to. Everyone else gets tobacco I know I sound like a jerk but most if they haven't bought a pipe may not be serious enough to smoke one. Don't mind helping anyone but taking that first step should be their own.

"Yes" is the correct answer ~ ~ you win a 2 week holiday for 2 in Hawaii!
In re: "Wish I had them back" - one of the stupidest things I have ever done was; I had a 19th century meerschaum pipe, a carved (shall we say) black slaves's head wearing a straw hat covered with the most bigoted prose, huge lips, with a heron bone stem about 1 1/2 feet long and a real amber bit - all in a fitted leather and satin case. The meer was completely dark brown with tobacco. My father got it in about 1934 and it was one of 2 things I got from him. He spent about 1930-1936 hopping trains all around the country and as I remember got the pipe in Louisiana. He ended up staying in LA in 1936.
Mr Moron (that would be me) traded it in about 1978 for the world's worst baritone saxophone. What an idiot!
I try not to dwell.....
