Just had my worst pipe smoke. Badly wanted to smoke today so went outside the house to smoke but it was very windy. Had difficulties lighting but finally got it lit. The pipe burned so hot, the smoke tasted terrible, my mouth feels like an ashtray. Yuck!

How to handle windy day smoking?

Wind cap helps if it’s a bit windy, but not if it’s a gale. Garage or shed helps more. If I want to smoke on a walk when it’s windy I’ll find a trail in a valley with lots of trees to block the wind, rather than a windswept lake trail.

I just had two super windy smokes back to back tonight. I recommend hunkering down behind something when lighting and relighting, to try and get it going without your flame dancing around and scorching the rim.

Once lit, I like to hold my index finger over top of the bowl if possible, to help with keeping the wind from stoking your ember too hard. I also draw really light in windy conditions. Otherwise, it usually ends up tasting bitter and scorched.
