I’ve seen two varieties of wind caps online. Does one style work better than the other in anyone’s personal experience?

I've smoked a pipe in the wind, but not using a wind cap. How do you tamp? Is the cap hot to handle? My technique has been to cup the bowl so my hand provides more wind break. Lighting in the wind is an art, and usually involves a tree, a berm, or using your hand to block the wind.

My dad used to sail our little boat smoking his pipe without using a wind cap, but he had had a lot of practice. He was also expert at using the clove hitch (knot) to tie up at the pier.

Wind caps on the left in the original post sell for $2.56 at SP and $2.00 at P&C. Is there an online retailer who sells the one on the right? I don't see it at SP or P&C.

The one on the left fits most bowls. I have had trouble using it on the Kirstin bowls because of the sharp conical chamber. Does fine on the cylindrical chambers. The one on the right does not work on all bowls. Does ok on narrow bowls but not wide ones, in my experience. I use them to hold tobacco in a prepacked bowl when I travel.

Wind caps are useless when it really blows, and don't help much in milder weather. They are more helpful in preventing burning embers from escaping.

Clapping a thin-ish object over the bowl works for me on the few occasions I am out in a gale.
