For the first time this morning I was outside smoking when there were strong gusts of wind. Not so strong as to blow ash everywhere, but it was definitely causing the pipe to "smoke" on its on. Smoke coming from the chamber and out the stem. Enough it did seem to be heating the pipe and affecting the smoke. Is this a "thing" or all in my head?

I do not find any pleasure, when I have smoked in the outside, in windy weather. Even with a light wind. The same with a coffee, food. I find it very annoying.
Yes this was not enjoyable. I found the pipe heating up often, smoke getting hot, and even though I set it down multiple times to cool down it was by far the fastest bowl I have ever smoked.

Any solutions? Other than obvious ones like smoke inside or don’t smoke on the wind lol.

In addition, you will not enjoy any aroma, you may sniff some ash. Neither in a pipe, nor with a cigar. I only smoke in semi-enclosed places, protected from the wind. But as always, this is a personal, non-binding opinion, hahahaha.

Yes, wind plays a big role in negatively effecting a smoke. Basically, it feeds the flame and makes the pipe grow hotter.

As others said, if you must smoke in windy conditions, using your free hand or a wind-cap to help protect the tobacco from the elements can be helpful. I also find pipes with thick walls and a tall bowl can help offer a little extra protection from the wind.

If the wind speed is double-digit mph, I don't smoke outside unless I'm really bored and feel like fighting it.

In upper single digit, I generally hold the pipe like this to protect from the wind as much as possible.View attachment 360808

good call! I don’t smoke in high winds, but cover the bowl reflexively during gusts, but don’t even think about it. It just happens.

I only smoke outside and live in Oklahoma...it's almost always a wind out of some direction, so I'd never get in a pipe if I avoided windy days! 😂 I'm jealous of you guys that don't deal with it.

The way I get by? I have seating areas on all sides of my home so at least one of them will be wind protected even in a gale.

My back porch is well protected on 3 sides, but a north wind, or just really strong wind will bring gusts swirling around unfortunately. It hasn’t been a problem yet, but I will be forgoing a pipe tonight…

Well when caps must have been invented for some reason. I've never used one, but I have one pipe with a wind cap. I haven't smoked it. Maybe someday when I get a house on the beach and it's windy, or when I get a house on the mountains and it's windy I'll give it a shot.

wind can do some crazy things to a pipe. I have had it literally burn through half a bowls worth in a few seconds. The pipe certainly got hotter then I thought a pipe could. That was some intense wind. The kind that will push you around.
By the way I remember that day and the wind felt like it might steal the pipe out of my hand. Yes lots of swear words I am not that proud to know came out of my mouth.

Wind is a challenge. It's why I almost exclusively smoke out of cobs when I drive with the windows down. Anr I always have the window down when i choose to smoke whole driving. If a pipe is going to burn out, I'd rather it be a cob.
