Why Prof. Einstein Smoked Pipe This Way?

My friend sent me this pic asking why Einstein smoked with a part of the mouthpiece pulled out. I found many pictures showing that he smoked pipe this way. I absolutely have no idea about this method. Anybody here smokes like this? and why?

I've heard it said it has a cooling effect similar to a reverse calabash. If that's the case, sounds like they didn't know how to smoke.

I've seen a few people smoke pipes like that. When I do, I ask why. They all told me they never thought about it.

I suspect they separated stem and shank after each smoke to clean and logically saw no reason to push them completely together. I don't think Einstein was a poser.

I'd be afraid of the mortise swelling and not being able to get the stem fully seated.

Mastro De Paja has a few pipes with that look, always made me want to push it together.

I've seen a lot of pipes with the stem pulled out like that. It has even caused a few shank breaks for me. My guess is that someone said it helps and those who listened managed to follow the suggestion.

I have personally ordered a pipe that way. It is called a stepped stem

That’s why I’ve never bought a Peterson Deluxe System pipe. It would drive me crazy.
