Most of you may not remember, but when I first came on here, the reason people advocated that you not drink alcohol while smoking is that it removes a protective layer, maybe saliva or something, inside our mouths, and when you smoke after that breaks down, there are things in the smoke that the sensitive layers of our mouths gets exposed to, making mouth cancer much more likely. I cannot explain this with any expertise, but it is what got slung around when I first came on here. Most of us old timers still don't advocate drinking and smoking.
Me? I don't give a crap what you guys do to yourselves. But then, if someone suggested covering a trampoline with gasoline and jumping on it while smoking a cigar, I would cheer you on with enthusiasm. puffy

I also recall that either the Pipes Mag or Country Squire podcast had a pipe smoking doctor on and he talked about combining alcohol and pipe smoking. I think your recollection is correct regarding the mechanism.

Based on what was discussed in the podcast I had decided to no longer drink alcohol while I smoked. Just water to keep the palate hydrated for me.

Out of curiosity I did some google fu and multiple studies show that combining smoking and alcohol increases the risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer much more than using either alone.

People can make up their own minds.

Yes, I guess I should have clarified. I am talking about alcoholic drinks. Nobody seems to be offended by coffee or tea... in fact, one gentleman I had this discussion with was drinking a diet soda with his cigar while telling me that I shouldn't be having my rye.
Long been known that that can increase risks of oral and esophageal cancers. But, then, again smoking in general isn't risk free and I've been doing that for 45 or so years.

Honestly, I have great respect for alcoholic beverages. So I drink in moderation. I drink beer more in the summer, most of them are non-alcoholic. Wine usually with meals. My body can't handle a lot of alcohol, and of course, when I'm partying, I don't drink too much either, my body knows when to say enough is enough. I have always known how to control myself. 3U3.gif

Because fire water brings out my ancestral savage. I start talking to my wife in chahta language, packup pounds of tobacco into a sack with the intention to walk into some 5 acre park and live off the land. It’s a pitiful sight. Some of my past posts reflect those days that have come to an end. Sober 5 years. Water, coffee and tea. I’m civilized now. Might as well apologize while I’m here too. ;)

Edit. 6 months. ;)
