Why don't I feel the scent of the tobacco when I'm smoking?

I've been a Rain Dog for 25 years, glad to know there are other muts in the pack.
As much as I've enjoyed the taste of some tobaccos and others have found the "room note" pleasant, I've not found a tobacco yet that tasted liked it smelled (in the tin or bag). Like cortez mentioned, I don't smell while smoking. However, I too have left the room long enough, after smoking, to return and find the lingering aroma left behind but it never smelled like what I had just smoked.

Just last night I smoked some,....what the hell was the n....oh yeah; Norse Gold, one of those Tinder Box tobaccos I've had in a jar for a long time. While smoking it I just couldn't get the marshmallow vanilla room note all the reviewers talked about.

Until I left the closed up room and came back with a fresh drink. Upon opening the door, I was hit with it... and it was awesome.

I'm convinced as the producer of the smoke we miss out on the room note, what a shame.

Really Sparroa! your post was the point to be made, if you know what I mean...

You really lighted my mind in relation to the matter... got what you said...

Just a little bit of training... attention... not expecting to find that 'thing' that we already know the name... it appears there are a rich and subtle world to be found under the things we usually give a single name...

Thank you for helping me start on this quest... for I think I was able to feel a likeness of what you said about the raisin...

Briarup,

Paying more attention is probably the most beneficial thing we could do in all aspects of our lives. I'm no expert, except in being new to things. I'm elated if I helped ignite your imagination and convince you to look deeper into your pipe smoking experience. Since my last post, I've had smokes that wildly varied from past assessments - a blend I once considered poor was actually phenomenal, and a blend I recently judged great was largely forgettable. The pleasure we derive from the pipe depends mostly upon us, though we are at the mercy of many factors - tobacco, pipe size, style, packing methods, rate of smoking, mood. It is easy to let all those complications get the best of you and move on, but I encourage you to take your time and treat pipe smoking as something other than a method of nicotine delivery; there is something special about it to me, and clearly for all of us posting here. I'm glad we have somewhere to go for tips and encouragement, and I hope I can be of some assistance to you again down the road.
