Closest I have to a hot smoker is my 1 and only meer. Yet, prevailing wisdom is that they smoke cooler.
Same I heard about the morta. Maybe the SMOKE to reach our face is cooler because all the heat stays in the chamber material??

Some talk of heat of the stummel, others about the perceived temp of the smoke and steam at the button.
Edit- What Jay says makes sense.

Someone needs to do a Star Wars themed pipe shaped like a Tie Fighter, where the solar panels are actually heat sinks...

Been thinking about hot stummels. (!)
It occurred to me that I automatically hold the pipe by the top of the bowl when the middle or heel get warm, and vice versa. And sometimes by the stem. So, heat of the vessel doesn't come into play much. The hottest bowl I have is of cherry.

My experience of 40 years of Pipe smoking is that it doesn't matter if the bowl is hot as long as the smoke is not uncomfortably hot. I have hot bowl pipes wherein the smoke is fine, so it doesn't concern me
