Folks say to sip something while you smoke. Do you agree with that?

I mean, every time you smoke, do you drink something with it?

Do you have specific drinks for each blend or blend family?

Yes, as Oz said, sipping is taking small spaced out puffs. As opposed to long heavy draws of smoke. Sipping keeps my tongue and pipe cooler and I can really enjoy the tobacco flavor. When I first light my pipe, or relight, I'm not sipping, once lit, I sip, or try as best I can. Sipping a beverage along with the pipe is quite common. I usually have coffee, tea or water with my smoke.

I don't specifically drink anything with pipes. Messes with the flavor. I drink after.

If you mean sipping the pipe...im not so sure. After some 35 40 years just breathing with a pipe gets smoke in and out. Unless Im lighting up.

Somewhere there’s probably somebody who enjoys hot boxing their way to a charred tongue, over and over. It takes all kinds.

Smoking more slowly will generally give better flavors, but do it however you like.

I know personally I started to tell new smokers to sip the smoke when they asked about how slow to smoke. I said that because I knew it would express in the simplest terms how not to get tongue bite without having to get technical or complicated about it. And also it's easier then trying to take a puff and wait a certain amount of time before taking the next puff. So basically just a way to avoid tongue bite and get the most flavor out of a pipe in terms that most people can instantly understand.
That said! Is it required? No but if your smokes are too hot or lacking flavor, it's one way to get cooler tastier smokes.
Do I drink something when I smoke. Frankly about the same as if I am not smoking. In the winter I don't drink much water on a walk with or without a pipe. In the summer I will drink a few bottles of water to rehydrate with or without a pipe. I rarely have coffee with a smoke, sometimes if the mood really strikes me I will, it is a good combo but typically I just do one then have a pipe when I am awake. If I am drinking alcohol which is rare (because I am not that much fun), I will certainly have a pipe with that, because it's just more enjoyable that way.
Only drink pipe requirement is that they don't interfere with the other. If one flavor overpowers and manhandles the other flavor I try to not do that. But if it's a drink I like and a blend I like it tends to be a happy experience.

Because you're likely to burn your mouth if puffing on a pipe as if it were a cigar.

Also, the flavours can be more easily tasted when it's a wisp of smoke that enters your mouth. Saturating your mouth with smoke dulls the flavours. At least, that's what I've observed.

BTW, I don't sip.

Two different kinds of sipping being discussed here. Slow sipping a pipe allows for more flavor. Sipping a beverage while smoking can prevent some dehydration, tongue bite, etc. especially in summer. Try it; see what you like. Do what works best for you.

As stated, the "sip" is a description of "how" not what with - for me, the notion of physically sipping something never worked and I'd describe the experience as much more passive.

No specific drinks - iced tea is usually with me on the deck but that season is in the rearview, lol. Sometimes coffee when in the garage when it's cold (think from now until April, haha) but only if that's in the morning!
