@ holysmokes: Welcome aboard.
@forum: You guys are amazing and one of the many reasons I love this forum. We embrace our new members and freely offer advice and information. (Actually we all but drown the new guys by feeding them with a fire hose.) Years ago information was gotten by hanging out at the B&M. While I do definitely miss those days, the information obtained on this forum is much more broad and rich. (My old B&M owner was a great guy, and a wealth of information, but he could be a bit one sided....his side.)

Tongue bite/burn is caused by steam, which is cause from combusting or heating a wet substance.

I partially disagree with this statement (it's not that it's wrong, just incomplete), but only because I know from personal experience that tongue bite/burn can be attributed to personal chemistry. Everyone's pH level is different and the alkaline in the smoke can cause tongue bite. But don't take my word for it, both Russ O. and G.L. Pease have spoken on the matter before (see below).

Here is my suggestion for a no bite virginia flake. It is one of the first I ever tried and it got me hooked to the point where I no longer smoke english blends. It is Fribourg and Treyer Cut Virginia Plug. I just opened a new tin and it is ready to smoke right out of the tin and if this bites you, then you need to look at your technique. It is sweet and flavorful and a high quality straight virginia.
Now as to body chemistry there are some blends that I cannot smoke because I get an acid burn the minute the smoke touches my tongue. If you feel this sensation, then don't worry, there are tons of other blends to enjoy.

I went through my old school notes, it told me if something is to acidic, you can add something basic(akaline) to neutralize/balance it. If something is too basic, add acidics.
Exothermic reaction will not to happen in pipe tobacco. You are safe.

I would prefer using non perishable food flavouring to change pH levels.
Fun tip: Mix tobacco and distilled water in a foam cup. Dip a litmus paper into the solution, it will show whether the tobacco is acidic or basic, it help figure your tongue tolerance. You should learn how to use it accurately, if you didn't already learn.
Dispose the foam cup!
(P.S forget about exothermic reaction from earlier post, wrong notes)
