I almost completely agree, with some exceptions, but the problem is not unilateral. The tobacco not only walks on the wine, the wine clouds the tobacco. Rather than enhancing each other, both experiences suffer from being combined this way. I can't say that I've ever experienced a match that was ideal, though some haven't been as bad as others. A fruit-forward Argentine Malbec, for instance, can stand up to some medium Latakia blends, and a crisp, flinty Sauvignon Blanc might foil a sweet blend. (Cynically, I might say that almost any tobacco would be a good pairing with some of California's and Australia's elephantine, over-oaked, malolactic monsters vinified in a "style" that really should have died with polyester leisure suits and mirrored disco balls..)
Have we strayed far enough away from dates on tins, yet? If not, we could always discuss Sasquatch. I can tie it in to overblown chardonnays, if that helps to keep the thread woven into whole cloth...
