40% of the urban housing stock is massive. And in the case of metals and stuff like that, war memorabilia, this is the stuff soldiers would keep as a momento, or families would keep of lost loved ones. Pipes were commodities, usually cheap ones at that, like you said.

I don't think it is easy to understand the scale of destruction in Germany, you can't keep what no longer exists.
You could have anything you wanted after the war ended for a pack of American cigarettes, or a Hershey bar.

@Celius Here is a fresh example of pre war stamps and shapes. Sorry but I don't have the pipes with me, so I can't take more photos.
The top one is qla Mc Rooty so I don't think it's that old but the other one definitely is.View attachment 431701View attachment 431702View attachment 431703View attachment 431705

Thanks for the pictures.
Bent pipes with a metal band seem to be a very common feature of german pipes.
The crossed pipes Vauen logo is still in use today. Interestingly one of the two pipes depicted in the logo is a clone of the Peterson System pipe.

Yes the logo is still in use today but it looks way differently now. I am not sure about the Peterson clone though, not enough detail to classify it as such in my opinion

@Celius since you didn't get this one, I decided to buy it and although 6 out of 7 pipes went straight to the bin( holes cracks etc) the Vauen was actually in great shape. It's actually an extremely interesting pipe - high grade, pre war and a straight system with nice crisp nomenclature. I will share some photos later.
I also found an old catalog with a ton of interesting information on the subject. As soon as I find the time I will translate it and share.
