Once, mice had gotten into my workshop. I have countless hand tools there. After I managed to find and block their entry point, I stayed out of the storage room for a week. Bacteria in mouse droppings can survive for three days, and they are potentially very dangerous. It would have been almost impossible to disinfect that entire space and every single tool with chemicals — it would have taken days.

Some of you guys crack me up. I survived my younger partying days and we passed around bottles and slobbery J's, no one ever died. I think that was much worse than a cleaned up estate pipe. Tens of thousands partied that way.
Perhaps, but people eat stuff they find on public bathroom floors and floating in urinals. Do you recommend doing that?

i worked retail. Once saw a guy at work, eat an uncooked chicken nugget off the floor of the dairy cooler after it had been there for maybe 3 months.

Recently I bought an almost-new Fiammata at the price of a new Sea Rock. I couldn’t — and wouldn’t want to — pay the price of a Fiammata if it were brand new. It is by far the most beautiful pipe I’ve ever owned. Beauty matters.

Likewise, I prefer to buy an estate Dunhill at the cost of a new pipe from another brand. The name, the history, the status, the classic design, the elegance, the airdraw, the button — all of these have special meaning to me, especially now that I’m still a new pipe smoker. Perhaps later on, I won’t care as much.

Having said that, my Dunhill estate pipes haven’t always been successful purchases.
One of them had a broken and stuck stinger inside. It took a whole operation to remove it without damaging the pipe — luckily, I have plenty of tools.
Two of them, after being refurbished, were so thin that they would get extremely hot, and very quickly.
With another one, I kept spitting out tobacco and ash without understanding why — probably because the airway had been opened too much.
Some others, over time, I just didn’t like for no particular reason.
Long story short, in over two years I bought around ten, and in the end, I only kept three.

Two thirds of my pipes are estate pipes, some of which are of a quality I would not otherwise have been able to afford. The vast majority of the time immemorial during which humans have enjoyed pipe smoking has involved sharing the pipe with others: this is the tradition, and the notion of the individual, personal pipe, a relatively modern innovation.

There are, of course, people who can't bear the thought of using a lavatory seat someone else has previously sat on, and there are even those who are uncomfortable with sleeping on the ground when camping because they are disgusted that animals may have walked there, or who drink only bottled spring water from 20,000 years-old aquifer-filtered glacial meltwater because city water went through someone else's kidneys mere days ago.

I do not think our specie could have survived 'til now, had our we always been so fastidious.

Some pipes you just can't get anymore because they stopped making them. This Strambach for instance. They haven't made them for years so the only way I could get it was by buying second hand off ebay.

The fact somebody smoked it before doesn't bother me. I used to smoke bongs and joints with the guys so a mouthpiece that I thoroughly cleaned with high strength alcohol is just fine by me.
