On a serious note I was just haveing a little fun, I am not a practicing Catholic anymore haven"t been for years, married a Methodist and raised my children in that faith, my daughter converted to the catholic faith in her teens, I admire people of strong faith, what I practice for Lent is what I"ve practiced all my life is giveing, helping, and trying to be a good man. The old cajun

So for lent, dont just give up; fill up! Fill up the bowl, fill up your spirit, and fill up the life of someone you can serve! But thats just my take.
Pastor, that is pretty good advice to follow all year, not just during Lent. If everyone aspired to that kind of service, the world would be a whole lot better place.

Joshremy, thanks. I especially like "finding the why in what we do". God certainly doesn't demand empty actions, but rather faith and thankfulness overflows into deliberate actions done with purpose because of what He did for us.
Lent always seems to sneak up on me, so thank you for the reminder! I think I'll hold onto the pipe this year.

As for the anti-catholic/ anti-religion sentiment that was expressed by one member: Applicable and informed faith is as rational as it gets. Anti-faith sentiment justified by a false sense of ration and reason, due to a personal and irrational intolerance for faith is simply sad and heart breaking. It reflects a deeply rooted pain within the heart expressed through confused hatred. I hope you find healing.
And this is why religious threads are rarely allowed on any forum. If I respond to this quote disagreeing with it, suddenly I'm hateful and intolerant of others. Yet, as usual, the religious get a free pass...

Well, this and several other threads currently seem to indicate many are on their man-periods now.
Belittling me, and others, for believing is pretty childish and makes the whole argument about wanting to be let alone null.
If you want an example of intolerant behavior and belittling believers of any kind you have only to look at the implications of the following quote.
Luckily I discovered rational thinking...
The asking of a simple question about whether anybody is giving up pipe smoking for Lent is not a religious attack against you and the world. Sorry but you've become a bit oversensitive if you believe it is. The above quote however was worded to attack.

Also to directly address the quote from Joshremy

Anti-faith sentiment

read that again, at no point does he state that a lack of faith is at fault simply a lack of tolerance for faith. An Anti(against)faith sentiment(expressed opinion or emotion)

The reason for the frequent calls to make religious discussion taboo are caused by the vocal attacks on either faith or lack thereof. At no point, until the original post that caused this tangent, was there any such attack. It was, as I have had many times in military dormitories, a calm and rational discussion concerning the observance of the tenants of a faith. It was being enjoyed by people of multiple faiths and I'm certain at least a few without. It was sprinkled heavily with humor(Pope Bradley indeed). My tangetal discussions of this nature are positively littering the threads lately...
BTW: If you do become pope can I be a bishop...or do you have to be catholic for that? I can never keep the rules straight

Not having taken much offense to the lack of rationality bit, I must ask the following supposedly rational question:
How is one's intolerance of religious display, of any faith or creed for that matter, is then any different than the intolerance for our common hobby/habit of smoking tobacco in pipes that the anti-smoking crowd exhibits ?

Nobody said it was.
The above quote however was worded to attack.
Again how is this any different...
It reflects a deeply rooted pain within the heart expressed through confused hatred. I hope you find healing.
Had I said that in reference to the religious would you have not been offended?

I don't get very offended easily and I do understand your argument. We could go into who started it but what would be the point? Instead, I believe we should all try to respect each-other and hope for the best for him/her.
The asking of a simple question about whether anybody is giving up pipe smoking for Lent is not a religious attack against you and the world.
Nobody said it was.
The point is not that it was written but that it was implied by the necessity of the post I referenced earlier. If you have a deeply-held belief that someone is wrong, it can cause a simple thing like this thread to feel like a personal attack. This, however, is not a reason to retaliate. Neither is an attack such as what was in either post referenced by juvat or myself.

Wow.
Just caught up on all the posts in the last two weeks.
I had no idea such a simple question would fire up so many people.
I'm not a hockey fan, although I liked the movies "Slap Shot" and "Goon." And while I live in the cradle of basketball I'd much prefer a cold water enema than watching a hoops game - even when my sons used to play. NASCAR bores the piss out of me as does synchronized swimming and diving.
So, when I see a post on this forum about those sports I just drive on to the next post.
But, when somebody mentions a football game, two guys dukeing it out in a golf match, a KO in the championship rounds or a pitcher throwing a no-hitter - much less a perfect game, then I'm all ears.
Hell, we're all different. But, more importantly, we're all here because the unifying threads are pipes and pipe tobacco.
I enjoy finding out new things about you guys. What you like or practice might not float my boat but I still appreciate your appreciation for that stick of wood, meerschaum, Brylon, etc. you stick into your cake hole and the tobacco you smoke.
Cheers,
Fnord

If a lot of pipe smokers gave up pipe smoking for lent, it would double the orders for tobacco on

the internet as they provisioned up for the end of lent, thus providing a powerful economic stimulus

and jolting the economy to life through the multiplier effect, all those extra busy UPS and USPS

drivers bringing along the tins of tobacco. And that first pipe after abstaining, hoo-boy.

Give up my pipe for 6 weeks? I could. I'd smoke my Cigars.
I gave up red meat as I always do. My Cholesterol is to high. I love fish. It's really a pleasure to switch off.
