Without exception I use 2-3 cleaners during a smoke. A dry pipe tastes way better. It is not a nuisance because it has become so automatic I barely notice it. I buy pipecleaners by the case.

Pitchfork, I'm like you, I just don't do pipe cleaners except after the doddle is emptied. Gurgle

is pretty rare, and I smoke straight and bent pipes (all various curvatures from steep, to

churchwarden, to only sightly curved). Yesterday, I was smoking my big Jerry Perry bent

ball, Black Cavendish, and had a minor gurgle that cleared when I tamped the pipe. It felt

as if a piece of tobacco had broken and settled in the bottom of the bowl and cleared the

air flow. Then no more gurgle and a long and pleasant smoke. But if I felt the need, I'd

use a pipe cleaner mid-smoke. Enjoyment is the thing.

I use pipe cleaners sometimes depending on the pipe and the tobacco. Its usually when I have a gurgle in my pipe, but not always. Not sure how it would be a hassle as it's pretty easy to just run the cleaner through it and you're back to enjoying your smoke.

When it comes to my 22 artisan pipes, I never need a pipe cleaner to soak up excess moisture, it is one of the reasons I love them so much. Once in a while I will need a cleaner to unblock a piece of tobacco in them but that is it. My other pipes will usually need one maybe two to soak up excess moisture and I honestly find it to be very annoying. I know I am weird that it should bother me so much, but it is a pet peeve. My goal is to have around 40 pipes that never need a cleaner for moisture.

If your pipe is giving you a wet smoke, it's amazing the difference that passing a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank can make on your smoking experience.
If you're new and still don't really know the difference between a dry and a wet smoke run a pipe cleaner through your pipe about midway through your smoke and see if you notice a difference. Also take note of how wet the pipe cleaner comes out. You may want to use the other side really fast, or use another pipe cleaner.
It is never needed when smoking my cobs though. They just naturally smoke dry all the time.
It takes 2 seconds to shove a pipe cleaner in there and set it down.
I have not done that with my churchwarden yet though... for the most part it smokes dry enough for me not to bother, and carrying around those long-ass churchwarden pipe cleaners would be awkward. :?

I have the opposite happen. One of my cobs is a straight pointed-end egg and I have yet to get through a bowl without having to run a pipe cleaner through it. It also happens to be entirely too open for my liking, which undoubtedly has something to do with it.

I'm kinda surprised to hear about so many problems with gurgling/moisture. I smoke mostly aro's and have only rarely felt the need to insert a cleaner in the stem before finishing a bowl.
I wonder if it's because I usually don't keep the pipe in my mouth, but rather in my hand between puffs. Also, I'm smoking mostly Petersons with P-lips, and of course some have that "System" chamber to trap moisture.

What's a pipe cleaner?
Just kidding. I use them now and again to dry out a little moisture, or knock out a clog. Other than that, rarely use.

That's a great idea, Al. If I'm feeling froggy, I'll take the stem out and use my pipe tool, but a pipe cleaner makes much more sense.

I have never found a need to midway, plus I hate getting the little pieces of cloth or cotton that i will suck up.

Sometimes. It happens when the pipe gets clogged or the moisture is to much. I'll put in the smallest in diameter pipe cleaners from stem to bowl to clean out the water and tobacco. Twist the cleaner if it won't pass through.

The only pipe that I need to use a pipe cleaner while smoking is my Peterson Aran x105. The P-Lip thing just seems to collect moisture a lot more than other pipes do. Still, it's a good pipe.
