Speaking to newer pipe smokers, I'd suggest you buy your first few briar pipes new from an established retailer, for two main reasons, and maybe a few others. It increases the chance that you will get a good name pipe at a fair price, which will smooth your way as you master the technique of smoking. Secondly, it factors out all of the price and competitive bidding noise in the process that is almost a separate hobby all its own. Many do fine with a first estate pipe off ebay, but if anything goes amiss, it might make it harder to enjoy the relaxation and contemplative side of the mystical leaf.

I agree with MSO, buy new from a good dealer and don't get invloved with ebay for a while. Ebay can be a tough place for someone who knows little to nothing about pipes. Buy new and learn to smoke off something that is not ghosted or has a loose stem or possible spider webbing in the bowl or a multitude of other issue an estate pipe can have.
Here is a nice pipe for under 100.00 that will give you a nice open draw and nice dry smoke. Just pull out the filter and toss it. No need to do anything else. I have owned plenty of 6mm Sav pipes and never used the filter.

+1 on a Brog from amazon. Best $15 spent.
Can't beat the pear wood (which might be Eastern European pine scraps).

I tend to agree with MSO as well. But for the reason that indoctrinating your new pipe to your tobacco is a better place to start than a pipe horribly ghosted with some either aromatic or English that you might hate and have a horrible time getting rid of.
