This from pipephil.eu, "These two entries prove that Plymouth was not only a Peterson product (second pipe) as it appears in Wilczak and Colwell's book...". The stamping in the image I previously posted in this string is from the same entry. And, the stamping is near identical to your "Plymouth". I think we have a winner.

I'm not so sure. The stamping font on mine is a different style than the Peterson one, which has a short name "Plymouth" while mine is "PlymouthMason". There's nothing about that pipe that resembles any kind of shaping I've ever seen on a Peterson first or second. My feeling is that if Mark Irwin says it isn't, I have to believe him because he knows more about Petes than anybody. If somehow more concrete evidence exists to prove otherwise, than I'll approach Mark with it.

Jim, this doesn't solve the problem but raises a question that may be useful when/if you go back to Mark. There's too much glare on the right-hand side of the photo of the nomenclature for me to be sure, but the second word doesn't look like MASON to me. After the "MA" the third letter looks like another "S" followed by an "I" and then more letters too indistinct for me to make out. I tracked down the original listing and the seller read the stamping as PLYMOUTHMASSIVE. This makes a certain amount of sense given the size of the pipe; the apparent lettering following the first "S"; and the number of letters it would take for the top stamp to be centered over the bottom one (if it was really MASON the stamping would be closer to right-hand justified than centered). You might want to take a loupe and examine that part of the stamping more carefully. While you're at it make double sure that there isn't a shape number anywhere on the pipe. As for the word MASSIVE, if it was used elsewhere on Peterson pipes to denote size (a la ODA or Extraordinaire) I haven't seen it but Mark's opinion would be worth having. Jon

To muck this up even more (I thought I had it solved)... here is an older thread exploring the same question:

Jim. is there a number stamped anywhere on the pipe (bottom of shank, right side of shank)?

Me again LOL. I had this haunting feeling that I saw this stamping before... alas, I restored and sold one a few months ago. See the photo below. Stamping still light, but a "v" can be seen after the "i". I am certain the stamping is "Plymouth Massive". Sans number on pipe, I am back to thinking it is an odd Peterson sub-brand.

That is the exact same pipe that Jim has.

I sold it to a guy in LV (not named "Jim")... hahaha. So we can surmise they made a run of these? Mine was 7.25" long and truly "massive". I described it as a Peterson sub-brand. If this thread convinces me otherwise, I will contact the buyer and work something out.

No, look at the grain. It's the EXACT SAME PIPE. From you to LV, from LV to JimInksLand. Not quite in the twinkling of an eye, but close.

"Who Made That Pipe" lists it as a Peterson second.

Agreed. The puzzling part about this particular pipe is the MASSIVE stamping; it raises at least a shadow of doubt about the Peterson attribution. If Peterson used that stamp elsewhere I haven't seen examples. And of course Massive doesn't appear in WMTP.
