Some of my earliest memories were hearing gunshots late at night, and running in my parent’s bedroom to tell them somebody was shooting on our place.

My father replied that it was most likely one of the neighbors who had a large family shooting deer to feed their children. He further enjoined me not to tell anyone lest the game wardens come and arrest a neighbor and fine them, even take away their gun.

I remember asking my father why he allowed those game wardens on the place, if they were so nefarious as that, and he replied they were the law, and there were laws against shooting deer out of season. He had no choice but to allow them on the place.

In the over half a century since then, the alfalfa fields of the dairy farmers are long gone, and here in a couple of weeks I’ll be privileged to allow about a dozen of my old friends and neighbors to hunt deer on the place.

But I’ve never really liked venison. I’ve always considered a deer something a poor man poached to feed his hungry kids because he couldn’t afford beef, pork, or chicken.

The old saying used to be nobody loved deer but the game wardens.

But many of the younger generation profess they actually like the taste of venison.

I make sure and give them all they want, but it’s my opinion people eat deer as an excuse to hunt deer, not because they really like the taste.

There are plenty of possums around, and nobody I know admits to eating possum, although years ago many a poor child’s plate had possum or no meat at all.

How about you?

Do you actually like venison?

A neighbor of ours, when I was young, hunted possum, and we were "gifted" some. But, I am not a fan. They would feed the captured possums cornbread and milk to keep it from being pungent... but... nahhh.

Squirrel, is good. But, it takes a mess of squirrels.

Up to last year, we were raising rabbits for food. I love rabbit. They are tricky to cook, but very tasty when done right.

Only when cooked right. Had too many overcooked bone dry venison from a friend who loved hunting. It's food offered by a good friend. I don't refuse that. Only good venison I had was one cooked very old friend who was in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Never had juicy venison like that.

If anyone ever gets gifted some venison... just coat the venison with a little salt and pepper, (I add a sprinkling of cinnamon for a Greek flavor), put it in a crockpot with a few cloves of garlic and an onion, whatever vegetables you like, and just let it cook overnight, or all day, about 8 hours on the lowest setting. It will literally fall apart and melt in your mouth.

I’ve never tried that before. Sounds good!

I think something similar or similar, I tried canned food cans. Buffalo meat, maybe venison from Norway or Sweden, I think, I'm not sure. My father used to buy them when he worked as a truck driver. I have tasted big game meat, some venison, and wild boar meat, in a restaurant frequented by hunters, in La Puebla de Cazalla, in Sevilla. The truth is that one of the things I love, is fresh duck foie gras, or duck liver grilled on the fire, and accompanied with red fruit jam, or baked apple pieces.
