Who got a New Pipe for Christmas?

My baby girls got me this MM Merrick Cob Poker! I posted it about it in another thread, so sorry if this is redundant. Smokes great! Feels great! Looks great!

I saw this very old Ascorti on the Lanzola site, and pulled the trigger that second. Got here last Thursday, so not technically a Christmas present, but pretty close. Not a "collector" piece but a neat old pipe unsmoked these 30 years. I am making up for lost time now - small billiards get heavy use here. View attachment 117002

My birthday and Christmas fall together closely. My haul: 2 Castellos (55 and 33) and a Nording Free Hand. My favourite time of the year.

Mine does as well.

I have given my family death sentence notices if they buy me a pipe. Those doofs we would be told to buy me a, as an example, Castello pipe and they'd come back with a low level basket pipe.

I made it clear to my family years ago that I did not want them to ever buy me a pipe or tobacco as a present. It's almost a sure thing it would be something I don't want. Actually, that's pretty much the way I feel about most gift giving.

I've seen a lot of posts that people have never had a French pipe that smoked well. I've always been willing to give anything a try. I have high hopes for this one since its similar to a Peterson system pipe.

On this forum? I read a ton of posts, and do not recall a lot, many, or even a handful saying that. Can you cite a few examples on a site? Besides Searock's post in this thread!

My sister-in-law gifted me a pipe and several different blends from Barclay Rex in NYC. The tobaccos are really good, but the pipe is an estate pipe in desperate need of restoring. Kinda strange she couldn’t tell it was old and a bit nasty. Oh well. I’ve been tempted to try my hand at restoring a pipe. Guess I’m gonna get my chance!

My dad picked this little set for me to fix up. Nothing fancy, just a kaywoodie flame grain meerschaum, a steel’s carburetor pipe, and a unmarked French pipe. Plus a nice pipe rest.

I got a pipe from my wife. First pipe I have ever received as a gift. (I posted about it earlier.) I love it and it smokes great. It is a Jason Patrick Jekyell and Hyde in Cherrywood. I do not have many pipes this makes my 7th ( one I made) not counting a MM cob and hardwood. I have to this point only bought pretty light straight pipes this Cherry Wood pipe is pretty heavy but I like it because it is so different. Very nice gift

I was gifted two pipes: one made of pear wood and a full pipe and accessory kit from Joyoldelf. Not sure what wood the elf pipe is made out of, but is is heavy for its size.

I'm saddened to see Butz-Choquin, and, indeed French pipes, disparaged on the basis of one poor experience.

Poorly made pipes happen - even with "high end/expensive producers - factory and artisanal.

I bought a BC bulldog in the 1970's and it is still part of my regular rotation. I have quite a few French pipes, both low and moderately priced, despite an avowed fascination and love of old Britwoods.

The French pioneered the use of briar. And a lot of shapes we think of as quintessiantial British/English are in fact of French origin. They generally over-deliver relative to their cost.

We are all entitled to our opinions, and I am not trying to "convert" nay sayers. Just putting forward a contrary point of view.

Fantastic. I love old ascortis. That pipe is just the right size and has style, class and a word which encapsulates both: duende
